Honestly, believe it or not, the best available version of MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM is a VHS release from Warner Home Video, as it is the only one that is actually licensed from the Preminger estate; all others, including the Hart Sharp edition most likely, are PD releases working with whatever they can get their hands on.

Warner has slowly but surely been issuing Preminger titles on DVD, first with THE CARDINAL and now the upcoming ADVISE AND CONSENT. I would bet money they will get around to a good clean transfer of GOLDEN ARM sometime soon, especially if ADVISE does well.

Mr. Heuck is correct!

Only WHV has access to the original negative and can deliver a first-class presentation. Like so many other films that have questionable copyright status (many films assumed to be PD really aren't), this one has suffered from multiple versions which go from fair to worse....

Wait for the real thing.
