I think they had to produce something theatrical or lose the rights to the franchise. Most of these licensing agreements require a new film every X years or the contract voids.

This is an actual thing that Peter Jackson's official Facebook account posted. Honestly, this whole promotion feels kind of desperate.

Gruv and Amazon currently have the Blu-ray extended edition box set of the original trilogy for $29.99. (Amazon appears to be price matching Gruv's sale.) This is one of those Blu-ray box sets I always meant to upgrade from my original DVDs but never got around to because of the expensive price point for a 15-disc set. But $10 per movie is very reasonable, and I finally pulled the trigger on an upgrade.

So, even if the new movie isn't very good, at least the promotion around it seems to have prompted a big discount on the previous films. I look forward to watching these on Blu-ray for the first time soon.

Rebecca Rubin at Variety said:
Also this weekend, the Warner Bros. anime fantasy film "The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim" is aiming for single digits of $6 million to $7 million from 3,500 cinemas in its opening weekend. The movie, based on J. R. R. Tolkien characters and set 183 years before the events of Peter Jackson’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, carries a modest $30 million budget. The film, which has mixed reviews, faltered last weekend in its international box office debut with just $2 million from 31 territories. It expands to 42 additional offshore markets over the weekend.

Box office riches weren’t necessarily the impetus for “War of the Rohirrim” getting the greenlight. The movie was developed and fast-tracked to ensure that New Line Cinema didn’t lose the film adaptation rights for Tolkien’s novels while Jackson and the teams behind the “Lord of the Rings” and “Hobbit” trilogies were working on two new live-action films for 2026 and beyond. The first of those movies, tentatively titled “Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” will be directed by and star Andy Serkis.

Saw this with my older sister yesterday with AMC A-list. We both enjoyed it, but don't get your expectations too high. My rating: B. For a low budget movie the animation is good, but these days $30 million for an animated film isn't all that much.

This film is based on a page and a half of Tolkien's appendices to The Lord of the Rings. Do any Tolkien fans know whereabouts in the appendices this particular page and a half is?

I read the main trilogy and enjoyed it, but it has been a very long time. I certainly remember the films more than I remember the books. I'm not an expert by any means. I don't think I ever made it all the way through the appendices.

It would be interesting to look at this page and a half, though, if someone could direct me to approximately where it appears in the mammoth text.

The appendices to The Lord of the Rings that are relevant to The War of the Rohirrim are in Appendix A, specifically the "House of Eorl" section. This section details the history of Rohan's rulers, including Helm Hammerhand, the last king of Rohan's first dynasty.

I would not be surprised if official VHS copies were already available at your local Salvation Army outlet, filed next to Wayne's World and Walk Away the Pounds.
