It looks like it could be a fun movie and may do well on a streaming platform, but I don’t think it will do big business at the box office. The visuals aren’t cinematic enough - looks like a Netflix series. Also, need to do more to tie the story into characters and plot points that the audience knows from LOTR. Otherwise, it’s unclear why this story needs to be told.

I would actually like it better if it didn't connect to the established LOTR mythology very much. If they bend over backwards to include references, that really makes the storytelling more narrow. Middle Earth is a big place and must have a long history. Surely some interesting things must have happened throughout that time that aren't just about setting up Sauron. I would be more interested in a new story than an extension of an old one.

I agree it would be interesting to have a brand new story. I just felt that, going by the trailer, this new film's story seems a little small in scope compared to the other films, so it might be good to reference the franchise's larger narrative.

This film appears to focus only on humans vs. humans. You'd think there would be some greater evil and/or wizardry involved.

I'm hopeful the Humans on Humans will make this like the Jedi-less Star Wars entries as those have been some of my favorites.

I agree with you there. The fewer Jedis the better. But still like to have a large Imperial threat.

How much of the story will be new vs. relating to the old films probably also depends on what source material, exactly, the filmmakers have the rights to adapt. I'm not by any means an expert on the subject, but I know Tolkien did a lot of work and the rights can sometimes be very particular.

Good point. May be like the Sony Spiderverse films where they can only use select elements of the larger universe.

I saw the preview for this in the theater recently and for a minute it took me back 45 years to seeing Ralph Bakshi's LOTR film (which I still think is underrated).

Amazon has the TV rights for LOTR and the appendices, which is the basis of the Prime series they are co-producing with New Line.

Warner/New line still controls the film rights to LOTR and this film is based on the LOTR appendices. It was reportedly somewhat fast-tracked to prevent those rights from expiring.

I don't know that anyone has acquired rights to any Tolkien material outside of LOTR and The Hobbit and whatever appendices are included therein.

Hard to imagine big crowds turning out for this, but I hope I'm wrong. I'll probably wait for streaming.

AMC must be making a lot of extra money from these, as it seems like it would take extra staff time to stock, display, and sell all this extra merchandise for different movies.

I was scrolling on Facebook and saw an ad that came up from some international WB page saying that this will be in cinemas from 8 December. I'm not sure what country that post was from, but that means it is launching in some international markets before the North American launch on December 13. That means we'll have some idea of reviews and buzz from international screenings ahead of time, and they won't be able to embargo reviews until close to the release date if it's already out in other places.

Honestly, more than any other movie coming out for the rest of the year, I'm very interested to hear the early responses and reviews here. I would happily go to this if I hear it's great, or I could very easily pass on it altogether if I hear it's not very good.

According to this promotional clip I just saw, the source material for this film in Tolkien's appendixes is a page and a half in length.

The movie is 2 hours and 14 minutes. From a page and a half of text.

We'll see how that goes.

And I bet those dainty pages were replete with useless filler words, like “a” and “the” and “and” and “then”.

Wasn't it clear from the beginning that this show was one big amateur performance?
