A nice account of what happened to end that show, detailed through internal studio memos and the like, can be found in THESE ARE THE VOYAGES, season one--a book worth reading. Everyone recommends books, so I rarely do. But this one is worth reading.

Just finished watching The Lieutenant, the complete series. Yes, its a wonderful drama, and very subtle... although takes place in the military, there's hardly any violence, and instead it concentrates in the personal relations... all of this perhaps explains why it lasted just one season. Too subtle, too serious.
It does have a problem: the intro makes you expect to see a comedy, and some of the soundtrack music reinforces this impression, even on non-funny moments.
