Y'all know I'm a huge fan of the games, and this is very disappointing. I expect more departures from the game without his involvement. The rumored 4th season makes more sense now with Mazin free to expand the narrative without any pushback from the creator of the source material. I've lost a little interest in the show because of this news. Just a little, I'm still watching, but I don't feel as enthusiastic. Being slightly disappointed in season 2 doesn't help either.

Well your last sentence kind of explains things. Now take your mild disappointment and times it by 20 and you can start to see what happened. Joel’s fate was never going to go down well with a lot of people, it happened in 2020 and it should have come as no surprise it was going to happen in 2025 as well. IMO and also others Ellie was miscast and it became pretty apparent in S2 (it was a lesser issue in S1 since the focus was mostly on Joel). She was also a character that was difficult to get behind and root for (some people will say “yeah that was the point” but it’s not always conducive with keeping people tuned in). Throw in some cringey scenes and dialogue (“I’m gonna be a dad!”) and you can see where problems set in

By seemingly most accounts, viewership dropped by a non insignificant amount. Someone’s head was probably going to roll and Druckman becomes a pretty clear target

I don't care about people's reaction to the story, then or now. The story is great, I just think the execution of S2 was a little off. I love the story, and I love the second game.

It is too late to change things now anyway. Best thing that could happen IMO is that HBO says no to a 4th season and they finish the story in S3. They did Ellie's half in 1 season, they can do Abby's in one as well. I have never understood the need for this rumored 4th season.

Look, I’m glad you were happy with the story, but the backlash and supposed dropped viewership is too big to ignore. You’re on one side of a controversial piece of entertainment that ultimately divided fans I guess in kind of a “The Last Jedi” kind of way.

As for season 3, I agree, they should not stretch this story into a fourth season, but I think some are thinking “how do they do it in a presumably 6-7 episode seasons

whatever they do, when the do eventually reach the end of TLOU2 I hope that becomes the end of Ellie’s story as I think it wraps up in a Michael Corleone sort of way where Ellie “wins” against her enemies, but it essentially costs her everything she cares about. I don’t quite know where you go from there (and we all know how godfather III turned out). I guess if they want to do further seasons in this universe, whatever but it should focus on different characters. (Of course though, HBO doesn’t have the greater record at continuing a series once the source material runs out)
