Excellent review and can't wait to get this. One of my essentials. One thing though, it was definitely not a top ten film in the 2012 Sight and Sound poll. I think one Welles film in the top ten - the one with the initials CK - was enough. Actually not sure that TLFS was ever included on any S and S poll.

Thank you for your fine review and I concur with your opinion regarding this 4K/UHD release.

I have to admit that it was tedious listening to Peter Bogdanovich's audio commentary on this 4K/UHD. Imogen Sara Smith's commentary on the 2023 Kino Blu-ray is a much more enjoyable listen. Of course, outside of Eddie Muller, she's my favorite audio commentator. I still haven't listened to Tim Lucas's audio commentary on that 2023 Blu-ray.

I had misworded that claim about Sight & Sound and have corrected my review to read as follows:

gathering respect over the years with six critics on BFI’s 2012 Sight & Sound poll listing it as one of the top ten movies ever made (it officially ranked 283)

Imogen Sara Smith's commentaries are consistently the best ones recorded.

Exotic title, but little to do with that place. I had to look up a period review after seeing this. It confirmed my thoughts that the dialogue and interactions were choppy and often bizarre. It has the look of a longer film whose plot is partly missing. There are some brilliant shots and set pieces, notably the funhouse finale. Also the aquarium and the waterfront bars. All in all, very interesting, and it does get quite exciting towards the end. It has some wonderful photography. Welles has a terribly false Irish accent. The courtroom scene is absurd. All in all, a strange film, but worth seeing.

The movie is kind of a mess but that’s part of its appeal as an entertaining movie.
