I'm not, but I would kill for a mint julep. I tried to order one around here, and was told that was a "sissy drink". I then asked the bartender what was in a Mint Julep; he didn't know. He said it just sounded sissy...I just laughed.

Will it be broadcast in HD this year?

I was under impression a "Mint Julep" was nothing more than a glass of bourbon with a sprig of mint in it...

Staying off track--pun intended...

Mint Julep:
--4oz bourbon
--4-6 sprigs of mint
--2 sugar cubes

I won't be going--in fact I have never been to a horse race.

To add to Chris’ recipe:

Put a splash of water in a very tall glass. To this stir in powered sugar (I use this instead of sugar cubes, as it dissolves more easily) and then put the mint sprigs in the bottom of the glass and bruise them a bit (crush gently).

Fill the glass with shaved ice.

Then fill almost to the brim with a good quality bourbon (you might wind up with more than 4 oz)—one of the few drinks with sugar that still demands good whisky.

Garnish with a sprig or two of mint.

Sip slowly and appreciatively.

Most importantly—stay well away from the mass-produced things pushed at most venues during the Derby.

Pretty much. It packs a tremendous wallop for its given name.

There are some who consider this a sacred concoction:

Trying to get one in a bar that isn't in New Orleans or Kentucky has proved to be somewhat of a challenge.

Mint Julep a sissy drink? Anyone who says that has never tasted one. I prefer Maker's Mark for mine and don't drink too many, you may not get up off the floor. Definately a sipping drink.

Myself, I have worked as a mutuel teller on the infield at the Preakness and I have to say - you people at the Triple Crown are a bunch of drunken idiots and I mean that as a compliment!

Mint Julep a sissy drink? What planet are those people from?

As much as I like Jim Beam or Maker's Mark, I think they use something else for last year's Derby (Evan Williams?)

Anyways, the weather is getting better as all the rainstorms are all gone now. But the humidity is going to suck.

Well, I'll be in the infield, where all the action is. :D

I kind of wish hottie Melissa Joan Hart was in the infield too. :frowning:

I'll be going also. I grew up in Kentucky then went off to college. I recommend that everyone try to go once in your lifetime, you won't regret it!! :)
