Hugo needed about $450 million world wide to break even.

It grossed $185 million

So it was a huge financial flop.

HUGO
Total Lifetime Grosses
Domestic: $73,864,507 39.8%
+ Foreign: $111,905,653 60.2%
= Worldwide: $185,770,160
I gave you a "Likes" for the research, but was disappointed to learn that this wonderful life-affirming film for kids and adults was not as successful at the box-office as it was with its high-numbered take of Oscar nominations. Hopefully, the consolation will be that it will grow into a beloved and much watched work as the years go by; as had "The Wizard of Oz" and "It's a Wonderful LIfe".
"Hugo" is one of my Top 10 all-time favorites.

Thanks, Tino, for your findings.:thumbs-up-smiley:

Feels like half a decade since we first heard of this movie.
There a date yet?

Also it has been half a decade since we got anything mainstream from Scorsese

What I read was that the effects are taking forever to complete but they look really good according to Thelma Schoonmaker. So, they had wanted to get it out by May but I think due to the effects process it is set for November 2019.

Apparently in half of the film De Niro and Pacino are digitally de-aged. So, that process is very slow going and this is really extending the amount of time it is taking to complete the picture. According to Schoonmaker they are only seeing little bits and pieces of it at a time so she has not even been able to cut a sequence yet that involves the de-aging process.

After Roma's Oscar nominations, I would think that Netflix will go for a release at the end of the year in the hopes of this movie getting Oscar noms.

I think they are. They are now saying it is definitely getting a theatrical run PRIOR TO it being released on the streaming service and for whatever it is worth...Thelma Schoonmaker says that this is going to be a wonderful film. She claims she is really impressed with what Scorsese has done and this will be one of his great works. She says "Don't expect Goodfellas, it's not that." but it is an amazing picture. Thelma would know I would say...but yes, she obviously would not bad mouth her friend's picture either.

Sorry to say this, but like Steven Spielberg, I consider those streaming service releases what used to be classed as tv movies rather than theatrical films -- I sincerely hope this gets a run in theatres and is available on bluray as well.

In this day and age there is no relevant distinction anymore quality wise between films that have a theatrical run and those that are seen at Netflix and other sides. That goes even for some series like GoT.

Does that mean it will be on Netflix at the same time it's in theaters?

I think the way Netflix is handling it is a two week theatrical run prior to starting to stream it on Netflix. It seems today the first two weeks of theatrical box office is what most everybody is interested in.

I will go to a cinema to see this. I am pretty curious about half of the film using the computer de-aged De Niro and Pacino and how that is going to look but with everybody involved here this should be a really good film.

The film is set in two different time periods; my guess is that he's using different formats to accentuate the differences in time periods. If I had to venture a guess, I would guess that the "past" scenes were probably shot digitally, since those scenes are going extensive post-production work to digitally de-age the lead actors.

Oh, ok, that makes sense. The way THR used "Both" I thought they mean the same scenes at the same time.

On the contrary I think they shot the past on film and the future digitally. It's the only way it makes sense.

That might make sense in terms of thematic approach, but the truth is that it’s pretty easy these days to make digitally-sourced content appear to be shot on film.

Scorsese is a die-hard film guy. He shot Hugo digitally because that was necessary for the 3D camera rig. The only reason I can imagine him using digital would be if capturing the actors digitally might make it easier to do the effects work needed to de-age the cast.

Does that mean it will be on Netflix at the same time it's in theaters?

That's what Netflix did with Roma, which forced them to book only independent arthouse theaters, because the big chains won't carry something if they haven't had a 90-day exclusive release window.

If Netflix wants to have a wide theatrical release as indicated in the link that @SamT provided in post #54, they will have to agree to give it to the big chains for 90 days before they release it on their service.

We'll see if they're willing to do that or not.
