Here we are in our strange little corner of cyberspace, the HTF Polls Area. In an effort to cover the wide array of HT-related discussions, the creators of this splendid online community have afforded us this area to...well, basically play games and ask silly questions. No thread is more prevalent in the Polls Area than the ever-popular Tournament. If you're new to our sick little forum, you might be wondering what the heck is up with all these tourney threads. As our delightful new member Vicki once said: Quote: "What the heck is up with all these tourney threads?" In an effort to inform the newbies and also to document the widely accepted rules of play, I thought a Tourney FAQ would be helpful. Seeing as how most of the Tournament Chiefs are very insightful and intelligent, I expect that this document will expand to include all pertinent aspects of our beloved tournaments. In other words, post anything you think should apply, and I'll include it in the Question List. Once we've covered everything, perhaps we could get the FAQ its own little link in the Polls Area, much like my seldom-used Movie Release Schedule does over at the Movies Forum. (Once we get the ball rolling on the questions, I will of course delete all this blathering.) Let's start off with the basics: What the heck is a Tournament? - It's when one intrepid HTFer gets an idea in his/her head about a specific genre or area of movies/DVDs and decides to let the masses argue it out. A collection of entries (usually 32 or 64, but that often changes) is placed on a tournament bracket (usually at random, but that also changes all the time) and then the individual seedings battle it out until one remains. This entry is then declared the all-powerful winner until Christopher Lambert comes along and lops its head off. Can anyone participate? - Of course. The only requirement is that you be a member of the Home Theater Forum. Since you cannot post a reply without registering as a member, I doubt we'll see many infractions of this rule. For individual votes, it's expected that you be familiar with both entries. It's not kosher to vote for Raiders of the Lost Ark if you've never seen the film it's up against, even if it happens to be Snow Dogs. How long do Tournaments last? - That depends on two things: how many entries, and the voting style. For my "Favorite Movies" Tournament, I set my limit at 7 votes to advance, much to the chagrin of people with actual jobs. Other Tourna-meisters opt to use a time scale, as in "At the end of 24 hours, the entry with the most votes moves on". So the answer to "How Long?" is "I don't know." Seems kind of silly that I even brought the question up. Shouldn't you have mentioned Nominations and Seconds yet? - In an effort to get a wide spectrum of choices, the Tourney Boss will often open the floor up for nominations. If the Tourney is on "Best Gene Wilder/Richard Pryor Movies" (which would be a damn short Tourney), george kaplan may nominate Silver Streak, then along comes RainMan and he will 'second' George's pick and nominate Stir Crazy. Then Terrell will show up and nominate See No Evil, Hear No Evil, but he won't second anything because he's a weenie. Then Chmiel will pop in to nominate his favorite comedy ever made, Another You, and second Stir Crazy. SteveGon will then nominate nothing because that's all the movies those guys did together. Once a movie is seconded by someone, it's in the Tourney. And Terrell's not a weenie. I'm in a weird mood. Do you like tomatoes? - You know, it's weird. I love tomato sauce, but I hate tomatoes! Can "I" run a Tournament of my very own? - Absolutely. All you need is a good idea and a short list of initial entries. It's probably best to start one after the others die down, as juggling 6 Tourneys is a pain in the butt, and it fills your Inbox with 120 emails every 5 hours. Perhaps this thread could be used to "announce" your new Tournament. Or perhaps I'm just stoned. How will my fellow Tournamenteers KNOW if I'm voting for (or against) a movie I've never seen? - Well, they won't, you clever little deviate. In order to maintain some semblance of fair play, everyone is expected to go on the honor system. Why anyone would want to vote for (or against) a movie they've never seen is simply beyond me anyway. But then again, I failed algebra, so I'm no Einstein. Any tips on how to run a Tourney? - Well first, make sure you have some spare time and no life. Those are the best candidates. Also, when you're seeding your final entries, use the printable brackets available here. Just fill the brackets with your stuff and you're good to go, unless of course your over-reliance on computers has made the concept of "writing with a pen" all but alien to you. What are the current Tourneys? - The Home Theater Forum is currently enjoying a true Tournament Renaissance, and the topics are as varied as my hairline is receding. Here's what we got right now: SteveGon's Sci-Fi Movie Tournament!! - Answers the age-old question: Which is better - Logan's Run or Zardoz? Miles W.'s Action Movie Tournament!! - This one started out as a Hong Kong/Action production, but the overall concensus was that American action flicks rock ass too, so why not include 'em? Come watch Arnie kick Sly's ass. Bill J.'s War Movie Tournament!! - After a lengthy nomination process, this battle royale is in full swing. This one's only up to its fifth page, so it's still early! Get in now and show your support for Haumburger Hill. george kaplan's Seventies Movies Tournament!! - This one's now winding down, but it was a classic HTF Tournament, rivaling even the vaunted Largest Breasts Tournament of lore. Get in early whenever GK starts a tourney, because they're doozies. Brain Lawrence's Classic Hollywood Dames Tournament!! - Following the controversial Hottest Babes Tournament, Mr. Lawrence (Merry Christmas, btw) decided to devote his efforts to the Tinseltown Tatas of yesteryear. Complete with visual aids, this is a classy and enjoyable tourney, even IF all the contestants are now dead, buried and moldering. george kaplan's Classic Hollywood Pairs Tournament!! - Who was more onscreen chemistry: Bogey and Bacall or Cheech and Chong? Here's the Tournament that decides these immortal ponderings. This one is also in its early stages, so hop in now. And if you nominate Prinze and Lillard, Ron Epstein will delete your account. Rain's Cinematography Tournament Vol. 2!! - Always behind the more intellectual HTF Tournaments, the Rain Man is a huge fan of the DPs. This tournament boasts the most abstentions, but is also a source of some sincerely insightful and entertaining cinematic analysis. Plus it's neat. SteveGon's Fantasy Movie Tournament!! - Elves, wizards, hobbits, trolls, orcs, chmiels, unicorns, fairies , goblins, warriors, and Tim Curry in 75 pounds of latex. If you know what Mithril is or you once owned even ONE "Dragon Die", this Tourney is for you. Some Jewish Guy's 'YOUR Favorite Movies' Tournament!! - This one's my baby, and the idea was simply this: Create a tournament comprised solely of member nominations, regardless of genre, and get done quickly so I could start downloading some porn. This Tournament boasts 80 movies, and it's not ending anytime soon. Unless I get a girlfriend. Liam S.'s Female Celebrity Tournament v2!! - Liam has devised a clever and fun way to pick your favorite ladies, and it's always fun to discuss pouty lips and firm bosoms. Get in now! --- ---Whew, OK. I'm done for now. To anyone who runs or participates in the HTF Tournaments, please feel free to post anything you'd like to see added to this FAQ. If I get no feedback, I'll simply assume that the 33 minutes I spent typing this up was quite literally a waste of my life span, and I'll go watch a movie.
