It happened yesterday... I went in to check the forum and BAMMO! HTF is a blocked site! :frowning:

They've also blocked Yahoo-mail and Hotmail!

So, my visits here will probably become few and far between. I have to use a laptop plugged into an analog fax line and dial into my ISP just to get here!

At least I got my HT mostly done before they cut me off.

At least you have internet access at work. Starting next month, only managers will have internet web/e-mail access at my office.

Probably because they noticed how many hits and time that you spend looking at the HTF, Yahoo-mail, & Hotmail. ;)

Seriously it could be something where they review what sites everyone in the office are hitting and what, they feel, is the biggest waist of employee productivity. Same thing can happen if you use the IP address or a proxy website they could eventually block those as well. My answer is to get to know the network security admin and get him on your good side its all a matter of who you are friends with.

We love Doughnuts, Candy, & of course money. ;)

What I want to know is this: Why are you reading HTF at work? Don't you realize that.......wait, gotta go, my boss is coming.

Ah, it's just a decimal long word of the HTF IP address, 207.153.159.182. In hex that's CF.AD.9F.ED, and in decimal CFAD9FED is 3484262381.

try going to http://3484262381
I'm not the same Kevin but I can explain...

The number 3484262381 is an integer value that occupies 4 bytes. The 4 bytes correspond to the 4 octets of an IP address. To convert, start by changing 3484262381 into hexadecimal, you get CFAD9FED. Now break the hexadecimal into 4 2-digit hex numbers: CF, AD, 9F, ED. Convert these back to decimal and you get 207, 173, 159 and 237. Put dots in between and you get 207.173.159.237, which is the IP address of the HTF server. So, http://207.173.159.237 takes you to the same place as http://3484262381 which is the same as http://www.hometheaterforum.com.

To convert other sites, use the nslookup command to get the IP address in the format aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd. To convert to the single integer, use this formula: (aaa*16777216)+(bbb*65536)+(ccc*256)+ddd.

So, for Yahoo Mail, do a nslookup mail.yahoo.com. You'll get 64.58.76.99, 64.58.76.98 (pick one of them, we'll use the first one). Then do the formula (64*16777216)+(58*65536)+(76*256)+99 = 1077562467. So http://1077562467 will take you to the Yahoo Mail login page.

Does your browser need some specific setting for those numerical addresses to work? Of course typing in the Ip address works, but in my IE 6.0, http://1077562467 does not work at all.

They probably blocked that in ie6, which sucks, imho. Back it up to 5 or 5.5 if you can. The above is a good explanation. Good formula, too! I remember seeing it in an article in 2600; a student found it to surf 2600.com in school, which was blocked.

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll probably still use the dial-up... I ran a splitter and a phone line to my desk to plug in the laptop. No one will see it.

I have no problem converting hexadecimals... I do that all day anyway.. but how do you find a site's IP?
