Yes, I'm talking about the Second Sight disc and its Atmos track. I won't be able to check its verticality, as my setup is 5.1 only and I don't know how to check that through dedicated softwares (I simply used Audacity so far, so it decodes the track as 7.1 only). However, regarding the rear channels and the stereo mains, it might indeed be that you found it too subtle because of the volume level of the rear channels. The L and R front channels however looked fine in this regard (compared to the center one). I'll check that soon on my setup anyway, though, and hear if in the end, my feelings echo yours.

Regarding the Atmos effects though, I'm unsure if decoding solely the TrueHD core will enable them, or if you need to be able to decode the whole lossless track.

I am set up for 5.1 as well and have no issues with other TrueHD tracks playing through this system -- the levels of my surrounds are definitely not the problem.

The core TrueHD mix does not enable the Atmos effects on a 5.1 or 7.1 system unless a receiver has its "Virtualizer" setting on (which mine doesn't). Atmos effects are derived from this base TrueHD mix via a receiver's processing, but what I was saying was that I SHOULD be experiencing SOMETHING in terms of surround aggressiveness even if I'm set up just for TrueHD 5.1 IF the mix was active to begin with. I'm not, so I suspect it's something in this film's sound mix.

Oh ok, thanks for the details about the setup. I get what you're saying, as I also tend to like Atmos home video mixes even just on 5.1 because it does bring a certain activity that usually is pleasing sonically.

Well, just to clarify once again, Atmos "tracks" are not really "tracks," per se -- they're basically bits of overhead info imbedded into the Dolby TrueHD core substream that an AVR or processor pulls out upon decoding (if equipped with an Atmos decoder). So when watching a film with Atmos on a system that isn't equipped for it (like ours), the TrueHD core mix is played without the added overhead effects that would otherwise be derived from it -- but the mix can be just as engaging and aggressive, as it still contains surround information (Atmos presentations are based on a 7.1 TrueHD core -- on our systems those get folded down to a 5.1 mix). The only thing we're missing is the overhead effects.

That's why I say The Hitcher's Atmos presentation was "lacking" on my setup, as I didn't hear much of anything coming from the core TrueHD track.

I know about the "tracks" not being "tracks", it's just easier for me to called them this, but what I didn't know was for the overhead effects missing when not being equipped for it. I thought that the mix would be folded down, just like a 7.1 track would fold down on a 5.1 HT.
The more you know !

Yeah....on setups like ours, you're basically hearing the core TrueHD mix folded down to 5.1.
