I would be shocked if there's actually a domestic 3D blu for this. There was a 3D pre-order announcement for Illumination's Despicable Me 3, as well, which was later cancelled as there was no domestic 3D release.

It was kind of surprising, as it was a huge film and Universal has seemed to continue to support domestic 3D (recent 3D releases of Pacific Rim: Uprising, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom and Skyscraper). But for some reason, they dropped the ball with DM3. I don't know why they would pick it up again with The Grinch.

I'm ordering the domestic U.S. 3D version, showing support for the 3D format, hoping for the best. Just came from the theater and found DR. SEUSS' THE GRINCH 3D version beautifully captivating and I want to duplicate the experience at home.

Despicable Me 3 at least still got released elsewhere. Maybe Universal actually got enough complaints about its being cancelled so they're supporting it again? They did cancel "The Nut Job 2" worldwide, which means I'll never see that one.

"Illumination's heartwarming tale for all seasons?"

    :rolling-smiley:

Remember when the studios used to wait almost a whole year before releasing their theatrical Christmas output on disc the following year? Jim Carrey's version of The Grinch didn't make its way to DVD until November 2001 if I recall correctly.

I get why Universal isn't doing that again, but I wonder how much this will sell in February. They'll probably have better luck moving copies next Christmas anyway.

I know it's no longer the Xmas season, but since we missed going to see it in theater, I'd gladly still stream it when it hits streets and not think twice. I won't buy it though.

I can't wait for my 3D copy. What does 16x9 2.39.1 mean? I know that on MINIONS, it was 1.85:1 and switched to 2.35:1 at the end for some of the best 3D pop-outs ever! Maybe they'll have something like that again?

It means the 2.39:1 images width should snugly fit horizontally centered on the 16x9 screen, with top and bottom black bars added to complete the (1.78:1) 16X9's hight. And it could include any additional pop-out visual effects in the black area if present in the sources image information.

I'm still rather surprised that this is apparently coming in domestic 3D when Universal declined to release the last Illumination animated title, Despicable Me 3, in the format. The domestic box office is about the same for both titles, so I'm not sure what went into that decision (though the worldwide box office was actually much higher for DM3, over $1 billion; the Grinch is apparently not as popular a character internationally).

But I already pre-ordered at Amazon a couple weeks ago for $21.15. I notice they jacked up the price after the pre-order announcement.
