Does anyone know why The Great Mouse Detective was titled Basil the Great Mouse Detective in some non-American territories (UK, Australia etc)? I have always wondered why this Disney film got a name change, so can any animation/film buff help me?

I'm sure a better Disney buff could provide more of an explanation, but the movie was based on a number of books known as the Basil of Baker Street series. The books may have been more popular in areas like Great Britain, so going with the other name would have been seen as more of an advantage.

BASIL OF BAKER STREET was to be the original title of the US release as well, and to my mind would have been far superior the THE GREAT MOUSE DETECTIVE, which really has no class and speaks only to children. I think the studio was worried that most people would not understand what BAKER STREET meant (especially children), although God knows it's one of the most famous fictional locations in history.

Last time I checked, I believe Baker Street does in fact exist. [IMG] 221B is a little more debatable...

Absolutely correct. I had meant to be specific: 221B Baker Street. Never was such a place.

The new heads of the studios (Eisner, Katzenberg) wanted to take out this film's Henry Mancini score that was more or less complete and put in one by Michael Jackson.
