I know. But Disney titles usually debut day and date with the VHS release.
Take, for example, the upcoming Winnie The Pooh DVD on May 7th. If you go to the main Disney Home Video website:
http://disney.go.com/disneyvideos/
you will see the listing for the upcoming release near the bottom of the page, which reads: "Available to own on a special 25th Anniversary Edition video and DVD May 7.
However, when you click the link, you are taken to this website:
http://psc.disney.go.com/disneyvideo...s/0707403.html
which only lists the VHS version (currenly out of print).
Knowing this, it seems possible that the DVD street date may be the same as the VHS stret date. Of course, this may not be true, but I only included the link since the street date on the Disney website was so distant from the one listed on Amazon.

What do you mean "cancelled"? How does Amazon show that a title has been "cancelled"?
To my knowledge, they've never had a DVD listing for GMD, and still don't. They show two VHS listings, both for discontinued/moratorium product...the more recent cover (the one with only Basil on it, against the clock background is shown as limited availability, which doesn't surprise me in the least.
I'm sure the VHS version will re-release when the DVD comes. There's never been an official word, AFAIK, on this title's disc debut. However, rumors have indicated "2002" since spring of 2001.
Please let me know where you're coming from, so I can look into this further. "Ve haf vays uf gettung invormayshun!" :)

I do know that the DVD of Snow White
was released much earlier than the comparable VHS,
so who knows what is up with this title?

Hmmm:
DVD: 10/09/01
VHS: 11/27/01
[] 7 weeks = "much earlier"...mmmm, okay. So, remind me again: what does this have to do with Great Mouse Detective being "cancelled"? Not trying to be pert or anything; I'm just confused. But I'm on some painpills right now, maybe I'm missing a connection.[/ ]

I'm just guessing, but I think amazon 'heard' it was coming and put it up for pre-order, and then found out it wasn't coming (anytime soon) and 'cancelled' any pre-orders they had accepted. I'm unable to find it at the disney website, so it doesn't look promising.

The 7/23 date is really old news, but it's still good to have this one finally coming out for certain.

I know the 7/23 is old news, but I didn't see anyone post it in this thread. So I thought I would add it in case someone who didn't know the date looked here.

By the way, here are the details on the disk:

1.66:1 Anamorphic Widescreen

Dolby Digital 5.1 Surrond

French And Spanish Language Tracks

The Making Of The Great Mouse Detective

The Great Mouse Detective Scrapbook

"Donald's Crime" - Animated Short

"Clock Cleaners" - Animated Short

"The World's Greatest Mind" Sing-Along Song

Excellent review. I am very fond of the movie so a purchase is a no brainer for me. I'm glad the DVD is actually pretty decent.

I wouldn't mind knowing if "The Clock Cleaners" is the censored version.

Anthony-

Thanks for the link to the review. I concur that the

image looks much better than the pan-and-scan VHS version

I had, but that the image also seems a tad cropped from

time to time,

on the top and bottom to go from and OAR of 1.66:1 to

the non-windowboxed AR or 1.78:1
