Lew,

Welcome aboard

Walter,

What I'm hoping to get is a consensus of Top films based on a sampling of HTF voters. When the dust settles we'll have something similar to the IMDB Top 250. I'll also be able to pull data on how different genres fare, classics vs. modern, foreign, etc.

We have enough voters to where an occasional 0 won't skew the numbers much (no more than IMDB), though there are quite a few Great films that are reviled by a handful of HTF'rs and I suspect they won't fare that well. I doubt any film will end up with over a 9.00 rating but thats OK. I've already entered some formulas with the votes so far & the range is more than acceptable. I think you'll be surprised at the results when it's all over.

I have so far rated 2 films a Zero, The Quiet Man & Dead Poets Society. Trust me, I am not trying to tilt overall ratings by being over harsh in my scoring, Frankly I despise and loath both of those films and the 0 rating is an accurate measure of my feeling towards them.

Brian, I am not bothered or have any problems with the 0s you gave to The Quiet Man (not really a fan of this, I actually initially disliked and bored by this film and I just give it props for some of its technical merits) and Dead Poets Society (I'm very generous in giving this film a 4 :D).

Correction: In my earlier comment, I thought Vertigo or Psycho got a 0. It was actually The Godfather who got 0. I'm still bothered up to now by that, in fact, I almost quit and stop participating in this exercise. But I guess, if I stop and participants (the ones who thought The Quiet Man and Dead Poets Society and those getting 0s are masterworks) here be like me, then no one but Jim_K will be left here giving scorecards to supposedly great films and he might just put Tootsie (not unlike AFI) at the top of our 100 Greatest Films list. :D (j/k again Jim)

* - you know, I thought about giving this a 1 since it's a technically well-made movie I hate, instead of a poorly made movie I hate. But the truth is, that almost all of the worst movies (IMO) that I truly think deserve 0's, are technically well-made (ex: Titanic, Cries & Whispers, All About Eve), but so excrutiatingly painful for me to watch, that I'm going to give them a zero and try to ignore the criticism. :)

* The first time I saw this movie, I'd have given it around 4/10. The second time, I really enjoyed it for the masterpiece it is. But I can never give a perfect score to a film
that kills the dog! ;)
** I'm not being mean on Lean. :D Zhivago is my least favourite of his films, just as Vertigo is my least favourite Hitchcock.
