While we're hoping, let's hope that Criterion and MGM get buddy buddy and the Sturges commentary track from the LD makes it to a future SE. I can hope cant I [IMG].
However, is it worth it? I've never heard it, just want to.

I wish it had the audio commentary from the Criterion laserdisc. John Sturges isn't around anymore [IMG]

I hope the framing will be corrected on the DVD. As many of you may know, the original release was over matted resulting a 2.7:1 aspect ratio.

Cool. I have seen this twice in the last month on AMC. A great addicting flick.

The framing has indeed been corrected. The remastered DVDlooks much better on a 16:9 display, although it is a 30 year old movie and is not reference quality. The commentary is new. There are some comments from Sturges, though, taken from an interview he gave before his death. The commentary is otherwise taken up with interviews from cast and crew members and is often not screen specific. There is also a good 50 minute documentary from Granada on the disc.

I agree that the new Special Edition of The Great Escape is not reference quality and while sharp and colorful in some scenes, it is often soft and faded in others.

It is Anamorphic 2.35:1 and is the best looking video version we have had so far and should surfice until something better comes our way.

My biggest gripe is with the sound, not that it's poor quality in any way, but those hoping to hear Elmer Berstein's Classic Score in full Stereo for the first time, will be very disappointed. Unfortunately it is centre channel MONO only ( with some ambience added) It appears they have spread the sound effects only, around the other channels, in this 5 channel mix.

There are 3 Documentaries included, as well as the new commentary, a picture gallery and a trailer.

I can't complain (other than the mono score) as the 2 disc set cost me only $24.95 Aust ( about $14 U.S) at a local Target Discount store. ( It is selling for a lot more at on-line sites)

Doug, you are talking about a Region 4 DVD. I was thinking about getting this one, but....

Does anyone know anything about a Region 1 release yet?

Sorry Tomoko, yes it was the new region 4 release that I was commenting on.

I would imagine that any new region 1 release will use the same transfer.

I would be very surprised if they didn't.

Regarding the framing on the R1; I knew something

was wrong when Steve McQueen was put in the cell the

first time at 23m, you can clearly see parts of the

outer "cell" walls to left. It even wobbles when McQueen

leans against the cell door... :)

The new R2/R4 shows nothing of this. Too bad really,

besides the obvious thing above, I noticed nothing

else wrong with the wider picture, I kind of liked it!

Yes, even though it wasn't OAR...
