On the Digital Bits I noticed that, among other Universal catalog titles ("House Calls"--finally!!), "The Front Page" is being re-released on 5/31. Assuming that this is indeed the Lemmon-Matthau version (as opposed to the original 1931 version), does anyone know if it's finally going to get the anamorphic widescreen treatment this time around?

That's a good question. I assumed that it was the 1931 version.

I've never seen the 1931 version, although it's high on my wishlist, and Billy Wilder is my favorite filmmaker of all-time, but I've never seen "The Front Page" in widescreen.

I sure hope Universal does not botch this release with pan and scan!!!!! 2.35:1 or nothing!

It is UNIVERSAL. Does ICEMAN and COLOSSUS, THE FORBIN PROJECT mean anything? I'm not holding my breath.

The more I think about it, I seriously doubt that this is the 1974 version. The 1974 version is in the public domain, if I recall, and Universal aren't even concerned with releasing the catalog titles that they own, let alone releasing a title that is going to be competing against a public domain release.

Isn't the current DVD released by Goodtimes?

Universal has licensed non-PD titles to Goodtimes before including Airport and the first few Halloween sequels. These titles were later re-released by Universal themselves. I'm 99% certain that "The Front Page" is in the same boat.

    Regards,

That's good news. I had no idea that anybody ever licensed titles to GoodTimes. I thought they were purely a PD house. Thanks for information. I really hope that this means will get the 1974 version in widescreen. As I recall even the titles on the current DVD are cropped off.

DVD Planet says it will be 2.35:1 (anamorphic)

Excellent news! I hadn't held out much hope for getting this title in widescreen.

However, I'll be cautiously holding my breath since this is a Universal release. They have a habit of screwing up even the biggest gimmies.

    Excellent News!

However, since it's Universal, I won't be selling my current disc just yet.

That is great news, straight from the source. Nice price, too. But..."snap case"?? I didn't know anyone still made those after Warners stopped....
