This movie sounds interesting.

I used to think Ridley could do no wrong, esp. in light of Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, and American Gangster. But I didn't really get into Kingdom of Heaven, neither the theatrical cut nor the extended cut on DVD.

Nonetheless, he is a fine director, and I hope he hits his stride again.

The synopsis of the book in those articles doesn't sound quite right. It is a long time since I read the book but I'm almost positive that more than 20 years passes and there is more than a few months of battle. I'm pretty sure that literally hundreds of years pass due to time dilation effects from numerous jumps to different battlefields.

I'm wondering how he will pull this off as the book is all about how the soldiers eventually lose any connection to the society that they are supposedly fighting for. Society evolves, not necessarily for the better, and the fighting soldiers basically become anachronisms with little connection to the people they are fighting for. That is how I remember it anyway.

Definitely an excellent read. It will be interesting to see if Scott can really capture the book's essence.

Oh, boy! I thought he was going to direct the recent "The Forever War." by Dexter Filkins. Thankfully, it's this older book. Oliver Stone needs to do the other one badly...or maybe even Michael Mann.

I read the Wiki on the book and yes, it's definitely a little more than 20 years. Just the plot synopsis makes this movie even more interesting. I never read a book before a movie but I might have to make an exception here.

It's a good read. One of the better ones in the genre of SF future war, and I've read quite a bit in that genre. The problem I see with a film is that it might have to have a lot of expository narration. IIRC, the book really has a lot of interior monologue where the main character questions everything, while also commenting on the changes that he sees occurring in civilization. I might re-read the book myself before the film comes out.
