the Fox fanfare is back
I never purchased the blu-rays but I had a chance to sample some Star Wars in 4K on Disney+. Watching on an Xbox One and LG OLED B7. All the extra postprocessing nonsense is off.
Watching A New Hope, some scenes look better than others. The scene where Obi-Wan gives Luke a lightsaber and explains the force looks very clean, cleanest I've ever seen the original trilogy, except when Luke is playing with the lightsaber for the first time. That shot looks grainy as hell, like a living, moving photoshop. Lots of artifacts around the lightsaber as it's whirling through the air. Lots of artifacting around C3PO when he's walking around in the sand too. The special edition effects look even more out of place to me.
Had a chance to watch the Battle of Hoth. The 4K makes it feel like I can see where the matte paintings are.
Jedi looks the cleanest of the bunch. Watching the sarlacc pit scene, some shots have this looking-through-a-freshly-windexed-window quality to it. Other shots, however, have this airbrushed look to them, as if a lot of restoration work has been done.
Like I said, I never watched the blu-rays so I don't know if some of this stuff would apply to the 1080p versions too.
For all 3 or just A New Hope?
Not the original unaltered version though. Those are the films I was talking about.
Did you really expect those unaltered versions to be available this soon?
No, I don't think they will ever be available. Officially.
If they release them on 4K disc with the rest of the movies then and only then I expect to see them. WIth that said, I'm not holding my breath.
Rogue One and Solo are in 4K/Dolby Vision/Atmos. However, Solo not available until July 9th.
im hearing more changes to the films too??
Maybe July for the box set?
when Solo and rogue one come to Disney+??
Any 4k of the OUT would be using dupe elements. Its already too late to get max quality out of it.
It would be easy enough with digital tools to re-create the OUT from the SE negative created back in ~1997.
That's an optical, so it's never going to look as clean and sharp as shots taken directly from the negative, unless they digitally recomposite everything.
Due to the sheer number of incredibly subtle changes and fixes on top of the more obvious ones you'd have to retransfer the whole movie to get it back to the defacto "OUT" state.
For those who asked earlier, the 20th Century FOX logo has been restored to all original and prequel trilogy films and not just A New Hope.
Wish they'd spliced it into VII and VIII. I know its not original but that would be a change everybody would appreciate.
There would no doubt still be some complainers, but I think most of us would be perfectly happy with a new scan taken from an interpositive that looked about as good as most Warner Archive discs.
I was hoping that as well. I know they were produced under DISNEY, but now that they own Fox, why not put them in front?
I'm hearing reports that they altered the Greedo scene again, I haven't had a chance to see it for myself yet.
I'll be the dissenting voice, so far, on this. No. That's not how the VII and VIII were originally made and the fanfare shouldn't be there. Fox had nothing to do with their production.
