The "scary pumpkin" thread inspired me to start this. I think every member who carves a pumpkin should post a picture of it here for all of us to critique.

Only genuine submissions please (don't submit photos of any professional carver's work and call it your own).

There's no real prize. Just bragging rights over the less talented gourd-artists.

So, chop those gourds! And don't cut yourself!

BTW: I'll be carving mine tomorrow.. I meant to post a picture of my "blank-slate" for inspiration but, my camera's battery is dead. [IMG]

Al, get the image location (right click, copy image location)

Then when you go to reply, click the IMG tag, insert the URL, and voila.

Well, I won't be carving this year's until the week of Holloween. However here are some from past years. Each montage is for a separate year. This is 2001 and 2003. I hope its ok to use imageshack thumbnails. When I photographed a pumpkin more than once, it was because the whole pumpkin couldn't be seen in one photo.

I usually use old movie posters and photoshop them to make my patterns. If anyone has some good posters or images from Psycho, I'd be interested in seeing them. I'm thing about doing Alfred's horror movie this year.

Mark (or anyone really), the image I want to use is on my hard drive, it doesn't have an internet location. What then?

(Edit: Johnny, thanks for the ImageShack pointer; never heard of that service.)

Try ImageShack. It's what I just used for the first time. Didn't take much time to figure it out.

Johnny... are those pumpkins carved from the inside? How do you transfer the image when you're carving on the inside of the pumpkin?

    Amazing work, btw.

No, they are carved from the outside. I first take the selected image and use photoshop to reduce it, as much as I can, to blacks and whites. I print that out (when it's a large pumpkin, I print several sheets and tape them together) and tape it onto the pumpkin.

I then use an exacto knife to cut through the sheets and into the pumpkin, transferring the pattern. Than I have these tools (I think they are small tools for chiseling soft wood) which I got someplace like Hobby Lobby and remove only the outer skin as indicated by the pattern. I'll also use a smaller exacto knife for some of the work.

It's tedious and messy, but the kids love the pumpkins.

Not carving all the way through, lets me do more complex patterns. I do thin the wall of the pumpkin from the inside, so much so, that the thined area will glow from the interior illumination.

I've been known to cheat for some of the movie poster text. I'll print out the text on clear decal paper, and carve out a rectangular block on the pumpkin and insert that text. If you look on the Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, you can see where I did that.

    Thanks for the compliment.

I love carving. I was actually pretty good at one time.
I don't think I'll be doing it this year as I'm single & live on the backside of an apartment building & no one would see it.
The carving kits they sell are a pretty easy way to make some unique designs.

I always thought this was funny / original. [IMG]

Ok, here's a thumbnail to my first pumpkin this year. Can you guess the movie? Hint, its not Psycho as I was thinking of earlier. Think before that.
