Any attempt by me or others to convey to you what we thought was funny would be fruitless since comedy is subjective.

And anecdotal evidence is useless as you know since at my screening there were howls of laughter.
Was it laughing with the film, or at the film? Was it laughing at the spots the director intended, or at unintentional comedy? I taught a film class to highschool students who would laugh at something like the end of Casablanca.

I can't speak for @Tino, but for me personally, I wasn't laughing at the film's stupidity, if that's what you're implying. I was laughing where it was intended to get laughs because I found the film hilarious.

Obviously, a lot of us here liked the film, and you didn't. That's fine and just goes to us having different opinions. But you seem to be really interested in picking apart a film you didn't like. Why is that?

I have not seen it yet but could it have been the sort of uncomfortable laughter caused when say a woman speaks explicitly about her anatomy at an inappropriate time?

With the film and at the spots the director and screenplay intended.

I thought we were having an interesting discussion. As I said, I only found the movie interesting, not enjoyable. I was very puzzled by the movie and what the director could have possibly intended. People participating here like the film. After I saw it I was motivated to read through the public reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Dozens and dozens of “regular Joes” had the same opinion or far worse than I did. I am certainly not alone. I will withdraw from the discussion.

No one is suggesting you withdraw from the discussion. And we are having an interesting discussion. Also no one suggested you were alone in your opinion.

But if you feel you have nothing else to say and want to withdraw then that’s a different story.

I enjoy contrary opinions. What fun would it be if we all agreed on everything.

At least you now find it interesting. Your first post didn’t use the word interesting at all. ;)

Take your pick of adjectives: idiotic, boring, gross, bewildering, interminable and with a score that sounded like a car alarm going off

Yeah. Saw that later post. I was referring to your first post #7. The one with your initial observations.

Who knows. Maybe your opinion will change again. From “idiotic, boring, gross, bewildering, interminable” to “interesting” to “I Love It!”:P

I'm looking forward to the film when it comes out on iTunes next week. Based on this thread, it's apparently another one of the polarizing movies where people form battle lines between "love it" and "hate it"

Only one person in this thread didn’t like it. I wouldn’t say that’s polarizing. Please check in here after you see it. I preordered it too and can’t wait to watch it again this Tuesday with my wife.

There’s actually another forum member who loathed it but hasn’t checked in here yet. He knows who he is!

Oh, I definitely think there's potential for lots of people not to like it. Terry happens to be the only one here so far, but I'm sure there are a lot of audiences who will dislike it. That was also the case with The Lobster and The Killing of a Sacred Deer. I expected that from the beginning. It's just what Lanthimos does. He makes the movie he wants to make. But many of us seem to dig it, which is good.

Okay, but we don't, so I'm not sure how to respond to that information. He's certainly welcome to join the discussion if he so chooses. But that doesn't make Tino's statement untrue. Emphasis mine:

Every great film has its detractors. And I’m sure The Favourite is no exception. But I don’t feel it will be as “polarizing” as some may think. I think most that see it will like it as long as they know what it’s about and don’t go in with pre conceived notions on what they think it is or should be.

I don't often check in on the "Movies" thread so I was unaware there was an even a discussion about it but I'm the guilty party Mark is referring to!

I loved the performances but absolutely hated the experience (as did the person I went with) of sitting through this, which was doubly disappointing since I had the highest hopes for it of any movie this year.

I don't begrudge anyone who "got" what the director was going for, but it wasn't for me. In fact, I personally found the whole thing rather dull and the pace glacial. I did NOT find it pornographic but I did find it unpleasant and yes, I was bothered by the historical inacurracies. I was reminded of a movie-going experience slightly more accessible than a film by Peter Greenaway (possibly my least favorite director of all time) but not by much.

That being said, I wouldn't hate it if Olivia Colman got an award because, though I didn't like the movie at all, I thought she was wonderful in it.

With that I'm drawing a veil. Carry on!
