The DSL Saga Continues: Need Software (1 Viewer)

The software from Verizon does not support XP...and so now I can not get online with my DSL. If it's not one thing....
The Sony Tech guy told me there are some freeware programs that will work fine with XP and be compatible for Verizon or any DSL service for that matter. Thing is..he couldn't recall the names. Anyone here know what he is suggesting?
