I may be a bit premature but I'd bet any money that when 16:9 TVs get more penetration, there will be studios releasing 2.35:1 films "pan & scammed" to 1.78:1 just as TV broadcasters do for their so called widescreen channels.
Just watch out for it & make sure the campaign's ready to go as soon as they do, this would be SO confusing to the average viewer.

Johnny,

It's already happening. Rush Hour is currently on BBC1 (I have the DVD already, just turned off my DVD player after a marathon Buffy sesh!). Rush Hour DVD & cinema, 2.35:1, BBC transmission (analogue & digital) 1.78:1 cropped.

And now the TV's getting turned off.

I love OAR films. The BBC only seems to love the bit in the middle of the picture, not the edges.

Cheers,

Bren

It happens frequently on TV, that's why I said just as TV broadcasters do for their so called widescreen channels.

It's just a metter of time before it happens on DVD.
