The Bits reports that Pearl Harbor may have sold 3.7 million dvds in it's first week breaking the record for first week sales. I'm sure this is preliminary stuff but not shabby for a movie people love to blast. I contributed some to that total buying one for myself and 3 for gifts.[IMG]

The studios must be wetting themselves. We've had a new all time sales leader every week for the past few weeks. Shrek, The Grinch, and Pearl Harbor. Only in America, where mediocrity outsells everything else. Wow!

I'm glad to see DVD catching on, but this bantering between the studios of who has the highest selling DVD is getting pretty old. Give us something more interesting like "our disc has the more quality extras" or something, not this "we sold more that XX zillion copies so it must be good" dribble. Chris S.

Obviously, sales statistics don't really reflect the quality of a film.

Besides, Shrek came out on a Friday, and made the record in three days (till the next Tuesday). If they would really count the sales of the first week being on the market, I am pretty sure Shrek would still rule.

Ok folks, no matter what the quality of Pearl Harbor you'd have to agree it doesn't rank with the best films that have been released this year. But this has always been the way with video; big titles like these appeal to the mass market, and so they sell big. They always have, they always will.

What surprises me is that this film, according to IMDB, didn't crack $200 million domestically. And yet, if those figures are right, and you take a $20 average per DVD, it made $74 million on its release week of DVD? Just doesn't sound right...

Pearl Harbor deserves to be the champ.

Best movie of the year in my book.

I cannot wait for Bruckheimer's next project:

It also seems that more and more people are willing to wait and buy the dvd and watch at home rather than taking their entire family to a movie and fighting all the distractions, and cost. There could be a whole thread on movie theater troubles. I know most of my family and friends will wait. Also, anything released in October to now will probably have increased sales figures due to gift buying. I personally loved the movie and 200 million is a good box office number for it's theatrical run. I'm sure they were hoping for more though. I'll give another opinion as well-For some reason I think people are less critical of a movie when viewing at home in their relaxed setting.

Is that 3.7 million sold to stores or 3.7 million sold to consumers? Big difference there. The local Best Buy has numerous display racks full of Pearl Harbor DVDs, and they aren't exactly flying off the shelves.
