I had a nice suprise today when I checked the mail. I found a package for me from DVDplanet. When I opened it, there was the Labyrinth/The Dark Crystal "Double Feature." I thought I had cancelled it or maybe it was out of stock, but what a nice suprise.
Here are the features, as if anyone really cares:
    The Dark Crystal
    1. Digitally Remastered Audio and Anamorphic Video
    2. "Deluxe" Widescreen presentation (2.35:1 dual-layered)
    3. Dolby Digital 5.1 and Surround 2.0
    4. The World of "The Dark Crystal" Making of Documentary
    5. Original Language Work Print Scenes
    6. Deleted Funeral Scenes
    7. Character Drawings and Profiles
    8. Isolated Music Score
    9. Theatrical Trailer
    10. Bonus Trailers
    11. Talent Files
    12. Production Notes.
    Labyrinth
    1. Dolby Surround 2.0
    2. Subtitles (wow, instead of a 5.1 soundtrack I get... subtitles)
    3. Scene Selections (another great... feature)
    4. "widescreen format"
    5. Theatrical Trailers
    6. Talent Files
    7. Interactive Menus
    8. "Inside The Labyrinth" Making of Documentary.
Well, it looks like The Dark Crystal has the "upper hand" on features and sound. Labyrinth doesn't say Anamorphic, but does comment on the aspect ratio: "This dual-layer disc is preseted in a widescreen version with an aspect ratio of approximately 2.35:1"
Well, for those that cared, there you have it. I'll write more once I have more time to view them.

Brad - I picked both these up when they were released last year. I thought both were very good transfers...much better than any previous version I have seen anyway. Hope you like them. [IMG]

Well I watched The Dark Crystal and checked out some of the Making of documentary. I have only seen this film in Pan and Scan due to the fact that I've really only seen this movie about three or four times on video. The widescreen version is awesome. pure and simple. When I watched the Making of documentary they showed clips of the P&S version and my god it was horrible. I mean, I know P&S is bad, but this was probably P&S on the fly. I cut out everything! Again, I know that's what P&S does, but when you watch it in widescreen and see some of those same clips in P&S it just shocks you as to how bad it is cut up.
The 5.1 soundtrack was okay. I mean, it is better than just stereo, but a poor use of the surrounds and hardly no low end. But, maybe there wasn't meant to be that much. It just sounded rather dry to me.

These are both reference-quality 16x9 anamorphic transfers.

I saw them projected on a friend's Sony 10HT...and the effect was *very* close to real 35 mm in appearance. Smooth, detailed, and natural looking. Better than most "blockbuster" hits you'd think would have better transfers than these older 80's flicks.

I have Dark Crystal and on the back cover of the box it specifically said that "It is presented in Original Apec Ratio".
