Let’s dig into The Cruel Sea. Beginning his career during Britain’s Silent Era of film, Sir Michael Balcon – grandfather of acting legend Daniel Day-Lewis – went from co-founding Gainsborough Pictures (known for their florid melodramas of the 1940’s) with Victor Saville and mentoring a young Alfred Hitchcock (the future “Master of Suspense”) to being named head of the Ealing Studios in London’s West End in 1938. Under his leadership, Ealing became a household name in the British film industry; among the most notable films during his 18-year leadership include Went the Day Well? (1943), Dead of Night (1945), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Man in the White Suit (1951) and The Ladykillers (1955).
