While I agree that it shouldn't be funny, I did see a lady & her baby take a spill on the escalator just the other day. This lady ignored the sign and decided to try to get her massive, stroller/car seat combo down the escalator. We've got one of these, and I'll admit that I have a hard time carrying it around when it's folded up, no baby, no carseat. This was fully expanded, and had the baby & carseat on it. The lady had it at an odd angle so that only one wheel was touching the escalator, and she was trying to use her leverage to keep the thing upright & balanced. I wanted to say something, but I was so dumbfounded that all I could do was stare like Cletus, the slack-jawed yokel. About 2/3 of the way down, something gave and the stroller started to tumble (I was going up on the opposite escalator, so I was in no position to stop it). The lady either got pulled by the stroller's momentum, or dove to try to stop it. Either way, she went headfirst over the stroller, landed at the bottom of the escalator, then had the stroller land on top of her. The stroller kind of bounced off, then landed sideways, spilling the carseat out onto the mall floor, where it skidded another five feet or so. The lady was dazed and embarrassed, and the baby was screaming--more from fright than injury, thankfully. I had run down the down escalator as soon as I reached the top, and by the time I got down there quite a crowd had gathered. I would have stuck around to see how both were doing, but a guy was screaming at the lady calling her an idiot, and I wasn't in the mood to get in the middle of an ugly scene. I would have told the guy to back off, but the lady truly was an idiot, and truly needed to be told so.

I work at the mall also, and thought I would chime in with my wierd customer stories.
During the christmas season of '00, we had just installed a bell onto our back door so that someone in the front of the store could tell when someone was in the back. Well, on one such day when we were going in and out of the back door a man shoved my manager into the christmas card display knocking my manager and the display onto the floor. As my manager looked up, the man put up his hands in a fighting position. My manager asked the guy what this was all about. The man just ignored him and went outside the store, and stared at us inside. We called security. When security came down the man said that the bell inside the store meant that we were goin to call his parents to come and take him away. After my manager heard this he told the security guys just to let him go, he was a looney anyway! :)

If you have a cowboy belt with a buckle the size of Texas on it and some uncool cowboy boots I won't hold it against you. :D :D

A couple years ago I was shopping at the grocery store close to my house and had one of the funniest things happen to me.
At the time, I was dj'ing at a goth/industrial dance club in Anchorage, AK, and pretty much looked the part - 10-eye Doc Martens, black pants, a couple layers of black shirts, black leather jacket, and my hair was shaved on the bottom, with the top pulled into a ponytail that was 1/2 my natural red and 1/2 dyed black, plus a goatee that I'd let grow pretty long. As I'm stopped in one of the aisles getting whatever I needed, a dad and his probably about 4-year old kid were about 10 feet down from me. Suddenly the kid starts trying to get his dads attention. Right as I look over, the kid points right at me and asks, "Daddy - is that a bad guy?" I thought it was funny, and so did dad, as he assured his son that he didn't think I was a bad guy at all. Gave me a big grin, though.
This just reminded me of something else...I think I'll go put it in the thread about the time magazine story, it goes more with that topic than this one....

I can't believe the wimp screamed and ran off leaving his wife behind. If I detected any potential danger to my wife, one can be damned sure I wouldn't move an inch. He sounded lke a real sissy.

People like him are a disease and really need realignment. What gave him the right to call you riff raf.

There is definitly a class mentality amongst the extreme rich hear in Ct. I have been thrown out of stores in Greenwich because "I dont belong here." The town of Mystic can be the same way at times. Were I live is a normal middle class town. But head west torward New York and you hit what I like to call the Martha Stewart villages and you see people traveling with there servants and body guards. We went to the Danbury mall once and I saw this woman shopping with a man dressed in what can only be described as a butler uniform. She was walking thru the aisles picking out items and handing them to the servant who then went and stood in line for the woman and did her buying for her while she stood outside the store gabbing with her friends. I over heard her tell the man to take the things home and have dinner ready by 5 for her and the kids, she was going to go with her fiends who just got a new limo.
To be honest she spoke politly and thanked her servant and was not rude in any way, but that is how some of the people live out here.
You know how in England there is the monarchy with the Queen and Princes, lords and Ladys? Well there is a reason this part of the country is called NEW England. I think subsonsciously the wealthy people try to mimic that way of life. But what do I know, I am just riff raff from some middle class town :D

I've known several wealthy people (not Bill Gates level, but pretty well off around the $3 million dollar net worth area) and have NEVER encountered people like you did.

Maybe I'm just lucky and I go to malls whenever I'm in Dallas area that are considered "upper crust".

Grenwich Ct is a Bill Gates type of community. Extreme wealth. Martha Stewart lives over in that area. The kind of area were people wouldnt dream of owning a car that cost less than 100G. Alot of the extreme rich that work on Wall Street live in that area, and now that we have two giant casino's over by were I live they are migrating this way for day trips and something to do when they are bored at night. My neighbors are card dealers in the high rollers section of the casino. They come home with stories all the time of the money these people spend just for fun. Lets put it this way in that part of the casino there are 500$ slot machines, card games that start at 10,000$. They have seen people lose 10 mil and not break a sweat. So now that they are invading the casino's they are starting to stop by our malls and stores in the area. I suppose its good for the economy, but they are annoying. It seems that after people make their first 100mil.$ there noses get turned up. Actually thats not entirely true. My father runs a boat yard and the owner is wealthy like that. He is one heck of a nice guy, lets us have his jet ski's in the summer and is genuinly a nice generous person.

Well, I have a few from when I was working as a assistant store manager at Babbages in one of the less friendly parts of town.

One day two groups from local gangs managed to get into a confrontation in the middle of my store. I mean these guys were ready to lay some lead on each other. The store manager, thinking quick on his feet jumps up on the counter and screams at the top of his voice, "Take your gang Sh*t and get out of my store." This promptly scared the sense out of the gang members and got security a runnin. Thoes guys booked out of the store like thier rear ends were ablaze.

Another one. Right next to Babboland was a lingerie store. And I don't mean somewhere with some class like Vic's. I mean a tramp haven type lingerie store. Well, it would seem that one of the workers there was having an affair with someone elses man. The woman who was being cheated on entered the store and the two promptly had a catfight that caused much disruption to the store. Busted counters, torn clotes, it was crazy. The *cops* couldn't get these women to stop fighting when they showed. I remember the place was closed for the next few days as they cleaned up the mess.

I could probably come up with some others since I worked in a mall for quite a few years. But, thoes are the true highlights...

Just a quick word of advice: Don't ever threaten to throw someone over the balcony like that. 1) It's definitely a threat of lethal force, and 2) It is tactically unwise - much better to catch them by surprise and see the expression on their face as they see the kiosks below getting larger and larger...

In all seriousness, I find what works really well is a low voice growling "You have five seconds to remove your hand or suffer the consequences. Four. Three. Two..." I've never had anyone make it past three.

These stories are very entertaining :) and remind me of the scene in Pretty Woman where the audience gets vicarious satisfaction when Julia Roberts returns to the Beverly Hills boutique and wipes the snotty sales clerks nose in it.

You guys won't believe this but as my bro and I were in Times Square there was a long line to purchase tickets for Les Miserables during the holidays. We heard some guy speaking loudly and making a ruckus. We thought he worked in Broadway as was trying to hype up the crowd. Well when we heard what he was yelling we changed our minds.
"Penis & Vagina, PENIS & VAGINA!!" He continued to make loud noises by clapping his hands loudly and banging on garbage cans. It was pretty frigid out at this time but he was just wearing jeans and a light jean jacket with a T-shirt. Well he kept walking yelling loudly but the locals paid him no attention, even when he pulled his pants down, bent over and spanked his own tush 5-6 times, right in the middle of Times Square!! He then picked up a pigeon that was feeding off the ground and started talking to it. My brother even had the courage to take a pic...

(I tried to fix the levels a little bit, but I'm not an expert with Photoshop.) I'm sure this show is very minor compared to what goes on in nyc everyday though. :) Just thought I'd share it because I had a pic.
edit- pic edited :)

I was in Time Square around Christmas, saw a man get out of a cab with a leash connected to the collar around the neck of some woman dressed only in a teddy, spiked heels, and fur/leather handcuffs. They went into some building and I didnt see any more of them, but that was a little surprising.:D
When I was living in Chicago I saw a bunch of what had to be 90 year old men that were into the S&M leather scene, riding the L (chicago's train system) There isnt to much worse than seeing nine or ten 90 year old men in assless chaps and leather vests

I got a story to tell (and several more since I work in retail).

Around August of last year, a customer comes into the store returning a Digital Camera. She had bought the digital camera around five months ago, and wanted to return it (or normal return policy is 14 days). When the lead cashier would not allow her to return the camera, she asked to speak to one of our managers. Our sales manager refused to back down on our return policy. She proceeded to raise her voice and yelled "You're a JERK!!!!" to our sales manager. Then she stormed out of the store. Since I was greeter at the door at the time, I said "Have a great day!" and she snapped "F%&@ you!". On her way to her car, she tore ads from the bulletin board outside.

It really amazes me how some customers can be so stupid and naive sometimes.
