In the original theatrical trailer, a natural catastophe is causing global upheaval and must be corrected. In new TV ads, it seems that an experimental military weapon has gone awry and the team is going into the Earth's core to stop it.

Did they rewrite the entire movie, or just the marketing angle?[IMG]

Yeah, I don't think it was ever a "natural" disaster. I've always seen the man-made/military screw-up angle.

It was always the "military weapon malfunctions and wreaks havoc with the forces of nature" plot line.

Its both: a military weapons excessive use causes natural disasters.

By the way, could this movie look any more like Armageddon. It seems like there were even identical lines.

I remember the tagline back when they delayed it about 5 months ago:

...but apparently this movie does not. They've delayed the hell out of this movie. It was supposed to be a Christmas event film.

I'll be interested to see if they successfully salvaged the film, as it looks like it COULD be a hit if they market it right. I for one am suprised they didn't push back the movie into the summer, but given the sparse field, I guess I can understand them wanting to release it in March instead. We shall see...

Do you know if they are going to cut the shuttle crash landing? I heard they pulled the trailer but I havn't heard anything with regards a re-cut of the film. I actually have this trailer on the Four Feathers DVD and its quite good.

Jonathan, this was in EW a couple of weeks ago:

So it seems to me they are not recutting anything, although that's never explicitly said in this article.

I was surprised to see the shuttle crash-landing sequence intact in the trailer last Saturday. Either them being pulled was just an urban legend, or they missed a few. But I'm tired of this trailer. Just release the movie already so it can be panned and forgotten. Ditto for Dumb and Dumberer.

Actually, the first trailer, released many months ago on the Apple Trailers site, had a voiceover (typical "in a world..." guy) going something like "every 700.000 (or so) years the world is devastated by an event of cataclysmic proportions...", and also "... as of today, we are 100.000 years overdue". There was never any mention of a military project gone awry. A couple of months after that trailer, Paramount decided to re-shoot some scenes and include a more "plausible" cause for the core of the earth spinning down because of complaints from screening test audiences. Thus the huge delay. In the new trailer, it is actually a man made disaster, not a natural one.

I sa the trailer Themis mentions in the theater before The Two Towers. It definatley was a natural disaster, no mention of any weapons gone awry.

Thanks, Themis and Charles--I was hoping someone else would substantiate this. I was afraid I had hallucinated the whole thing!:b

I saw that trailer too. I still think it mentioned a government weapon/program that like demagnetized the core or something like that. But oh well, I dont plan on seeing the movie either way.

There was a trailer that opened with a voice over: "Every x million years some sort of catastrophic event takes place on earth. We are currently x million years overdue for the next one." Then they cut to painfully stupid, but amusing dialogue about the core of the earth stop spinning. No mention ever about a government weapon.
