Warner Bros. is developing a remake of The Color Purple which will be based on the Broadway musical adaptation. Steven Spielberg, who of course directed the original film, is producing but won't direct again.

The 2015 Broadway revival won Cynthia Erivo a Tony for playing Celie in the year otherwise dominated by Hamilton (Erivo, and the set design for the revival of She Loves Me, were the only two competitors to Hamilton which won.) She of course made her film debut in Bad Times at the El Royale in what I think is a debut for the ages, and also has Widows coming out in a couple weeks. No casting has been announced yet since the movie is looking for a writer right now, but if they've got any sense at all, they've got to go get her to reprise her performance for the new movie.
