True true. TV in display rooms blast the contrast out and many people use that same setting in their homes. Not a lot of calibration going on. At least we don't have to routinely do the convergence on our rear screen projection televisions anymore. What a pain in the ass that was.

The Blu-ray is too bright, incorrectly so, and differs in this way from the broadcast. You can easily see this by comparing the black bars:

    http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=129243&position=18

to any other black bars from 4:3 material:

    http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=68388&position=1

Flick between the two and it's obvious. You can even see the video noise in the black bars that will have been hidden at the correct levels the restoration will have been mastered at.

    Consequently, shadows appear washed out:

    http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/screenshot.php?movieid=129243&position=8

(I would suggest viewing all caps at full 1920x1080)

A change of RGB colour space on Blu-ray players that allow it (from Video levels 16-235 to PC levels 0-255) will correct the problem.

Good. I was watching this and thought I was hallucinating when I saw how bright the black bars were sometimes.

Ve-r-r-r-ry interesting. I'm glad this came up, and I hope the corrected copy sets will be appropriately marked since I will wait to buy one.

I stand corrected, but I didn't think these discs were much different than the broadcast showings from two months ago. I'm not sure I'll return mine.

I stand corrected, too, on my assumptions about the "reviews ".

    Well done, PBS.

I only saw this thread this morning and wish to weigh in. Mine is one of the quotes Mike F. listed in his posing of the 9th. I was not "drunk" or whatever some might think. I and the others like me may have received a set from a bad production run. I don't know.

My monitor has been calibrated by an ISF pro yearly and I'm very knowledgeable concerning video settings. The best evidence of the problem for me were on the "title cards" setting off the different sections of the documentary (ex. "The Cause"). Instead of white type on a black background it is a very light gray. I use OAR and even the pillars to each side were affected.

It was gratifying that someone at PBS was monitoring the Amazon buyer's thread as there was no way I could find to complain to them. This was a major fiasco in my view.

Be careful making uninformed comments such as some I've seen here about other people's possible shortcomings - you could and ARE wrong.

QA/QC is clearly lacking at the production facility where these discs were made.

PBS has a history of fixing problems when they arise, and not hiding the facts.

So I've been holding off on buying this, and while Costco has it at my price point right now ($65), I guess I need to hold off a little longer until the corrected sets come out? Or will this only be through contacting PBS for disc replacements?

No, it looks like they will be reissuing corrected sets to retail, but we just need to be on top of how to identify them when they come out.

Into my Amazon cart this one goes but I do note the bright image problems and will check with Amazon and the seller on this first.
We have some close friends who have kids approaching junior high age and I might end up loaning this one out on occasion as our friends would appreciate this educational package.

PBS has a record of not only transparency with problems, but ease of replacements.

The corrected version evidently has a UPC of 841887027380. The original version had a UPC of 841887025669.

My corrected set arrived from PBS today. A quick check of Episode 1 shows the problem has been corrected, at least to my eyes and modest system. The side bars are now black, and the picture no longer looks whitewashed. The beginning and end titles now have a black background.

The package still has the old UPC printed on it. There was a sticker on the outside of the shrinkwrap covering that with the new UPC of 841887027380.

The odd behavior of the subtitles moving between left, center and right is still there.
