It looks like UCLA restored The Awful Truth a few years ago, so the upcoming DVD ought to be somewhat better than You Can't Take It With You.

The sound on the restored version is straight off the original nitrate soundtrack negative.

Let us hope that Columbia made use of these fine elements.

I hope so. [IMG] This is such a witty film, and I have only seen the pretty bad print that Columbia released on VHS.

Maybe we should make a rule for Michael Moore's being referred to as "MM Awful Truth", and this one being referred to as "The Awful Truth NMM" (Not Michael Moore).

Actually, I'm completely miffed, as I confused the Awful Truth (MM), which is out, with The Big One, which is not. So I shouldn't even be here.

My bad, carry on with your discussion.:b

So, the Cary Grant/Irene Dunne film comes out on DVD
this coming Tuesday. Any reviews of the DVD yet?

With Columbia's recent record on classics, I am
a bit worried, and I love this film.

Looks like this transfer will be on par with "The Talk of the Town" and "You Can't Take It With You". I will have my dvd tomorrow, I will watch it then try to compare it to my video tape copy.

It's really ashamed that Columbia didn't go the extra mile in these recent dvd releases of the following titles as they did with "His Girl Friday". I'm not only disappointed in the video presentations but Columbia is still charging more for their classic films on dvd than their competition such as Warner, Fox, Universal, MGM and even Paramount. In my opinion, I believe Columbia is taking a step back in releasing high quality presentations of their classic films.

That really is shameful of Columbia.

UCLA has a restored version and Columbia ends up not using it? Most studios would jump at the chance of using a restored print.

Have any of you actually seen this DVD or are you merely speculating?

    Rain,
Based on my posting history, you should know I don't blast any studio for dvd quality unless I've seen the dvd first hand.

    Aw, well, that is unfortunate.

However, as I have seen neither film (on VHS or otherwise), I'll probably still pick these up eventually.

I watched my copy last night and I agree the video quality leaves something to be desired -- kinda grainy. Definitely not up to the quality of It Happened One Night or His Girl Friday. The audio was good however, very clean.

I still love this movie though. Makes me laugh out loud even after many viewings. Worth a rental if you haven't seen it.
