That's funny, I was coming on specifically to let you know. My set arrived an hour ago, it was bundled with the Man in a Suitcase pre-order, so it had to wait for that to ship out.

Yes they do. You'll have no trouble playing them.

Considering the source materials, they look pretty good, but I can see why no thought was given to making this a Blu Ray set.
Scott, we must have been on the same wavelength today! Thank you so much for confirming that the discs work in Region 1 DVD players. I will be ordering the set this evening.

I emailed ViaVision to confirm what format (NTSC or PAL) this release is in and if they will play in a Region 1 DVD player. Here is the response I received back: The discs for this set are in PAL format, and will safely play on a US DVD player.

Since I previously purchased Alfred Hitchcock Presents: The Complete Series and The Alfred Hitchcock Hour: The Complete Series and both sets were in NTSC format, I assumed the Cathy Gale Set would also be in NTSC format.

I thought PAL discs do not play in Region 1 DVD Players.
Never take too much notice of what Via Vision reply as they are noted for not answering questions properly or leave out answers. Very frustrating. For me the latest has been a reply to two queries I had on their upcoming A$700 plus set of the TV drama Prisoner Cell Block H. No reply about episodes that edited out a story line due too close to a real case in my state but available complete in UK on their TV and I got a special DVD from UK with the episodes that included the censored storyline. I sold a few imported copies too at the time as well. I also asked about some poor surviving tapes that better copies has been found later. All they said was that the same Masters used were the same as an earlier release that was about A$1000 more expensive.

I really just wish labels would make DVD and Blu Ray releases in the same dimensions for my OCD...

I ordered the set last night from ViaVision. They claim they will ship it within 10 working days. I found a picture of the backside of the case it comes in online which confirmed the discs are PAL All Region and was pleasantly surprised by all the extras:

This collection celebrates the Cathy Gale years of the incredibly popular and enduring action series, The Avengers, starring Patrick Macnee and Honor Blackman. Featuring every episode from Series 2 and 3, this 16-disc set sees Steed’s occasional operatives Dr. Martin King and nightclub singer Venus Smith join him on select investigations – plus – every surviving episode of Series 1 is included where Steed is paired with Dr. David Keel.

Special Features:
• Audio Commentary on Hot Snow and The Mauritius Penny by producer Leonard White
• Audio Commentary on Mr. Teddy Bear by writer Martin Woodhouse
• Audio Commentary on Death of a Great Dane and Mandrake by writer Roger Marshall
• Audio Commentary on A Chorus of Frogs by actress Julie Stevens
• Audio Commentary by writer Brian Clemens on Brief for Murder
• Audio Commentary by director Don Leaver on Man with Two Shadows
• Audio Commentary by script editor Richard Bates on The Grandeur That Was Rome
• Audio Commentary by director Jonathan Alwyn for The Outside-In Man
• Select episode introductions by Patrick Macnee, Honor Blackman and Julie Stevens
• Gale Force: Honor Blackman Interview
• Collector’s Lot – Honor Blackman interviews Avengers Memorabilia Collector
• Avenging the Avengers – documentary + extended interviews
• Leonard White’s Original Caption Cards
• Full episode of Police Surgeon – the series percusor to The Avengers, plus introduction featurette
• Episode Reconstructions for 13 “lost” Series 1 stories
• UTV interviews with Patrick Macnee and Ian Hendry
• Armchair Theatre – The Importance of Being Earnest – starring Patrick Macnee – Act 3 only (only surviving footage)
• Stills Galleries

And, according to this unboxing video for this set, The Avengers: The Cathy Gale Years DVD Collection Unboxing, in which the host claims the discs are all Region 4 locked (Amazon also mentions this on their listing for the set btw) and not to mention the appalling way he pulls discs out of the cases and lays them, playing side down mind you, presumably on an off-camera table which may bring tears to your eyes as home video enthusiasts, I can happily announce that starting at 4:33 in the video he confirms "Tunnel of Fear" is included in this set.

The Avengers have been a "grail" series for me ever since I started collecting films and television series on home media. I am overjoyed to finally have acquired an "as nearly complete as possible" DVD collection of the Avengers TV Series and want to sincerely thank all of you who chimed in on this thread for your wisdom and support.

I assume the episodes have all been Vidfired (or A.I.'d, or whatever process has been employed) back to their original videotape look(?). I have looked for previews/clips frm this set via Youtube and some other places but thus far have not found anything
