I really enjoyed the film in theatres and saw it several times.  I was impressed with the acting for they had to tell their story with actions and facial expressions, which is much harder to do than just using voice and voice inflections to do so.  Silent acting is a lost art.  I think that is what grabbed most people and why they enjoyed the picture.  Was it a gimmick, no, it was different and that is what made it what it was.
Reminding us all of that era when they didn't need words because they had...

You make a good point, and it's worth noting that the film makes minimal use of intertitles. There is a good deal of conversation which is not presented with intertitles, but they really aren't needed because the actions and expressions of the actors provide us with the gist of it.

Funny thing about the movie: In the opening premiere scenes, when they show the stage from the sides, the movie they're all watching fills the slightly rectangular proscenium with a picture that is definitely wider than it is tall. But in straight-on shots, the picture is nearly a perfect square, flanked within the wider proscenium by "pillarbox" like black masking. One might argue (incorrectly I think) that the side angle would stretch the picture width, but the fact that there is masking on the sides in the straight-on shots and none in the side angles, simply suggests the picture was matted-in incorrectly from one angle to the other.
Funny thing about the disc: There is actually an option for English subtitles! I have to have a look at that. Last time I saw the picture there wasn't much audible dialogue. I did find that one can possibly avoid the damn disclaimers which come up whenever pressing play by selecting the first scene from the scene selection.

If it's SDH subtitles people that are hard of hearing would need them for a few scenes:

The sound effects nightmare as well as the ending.

The subtitles are English SDH and Spanish. I didn't test them but I presume that the Spanish subtitles appear under the intertitles. I'll check when I get a minute to do so.

Yeah I've seen the movie and know where that stuff is, it's just kinda funny as there would be nothing coming up for a very long time unless it was describing the music, which is exactly what we have.
