The American Society of Magical Negroes doesn’t work that well. The conversation this film wants to have and explore is ultimately shortchanged by its hook, a society of magical Black people who make the world a safer, more peaceful place by placating white folk. That hook, which the film embraces and only in passing interrogates, is woefully underdeveloped and soon becomes a distraction to its emotional core. The core is an interesting and sweet love story that offers all the space and opportunity to explore the conversation it wants to have. There are good performances and strong scenes, but the film doesn’t get to where it wants to go, and that’s a shame.

A film with an interesting concept, that just never took flight.
