I forgot to watch that last night. Looking at the list of winners, I'm glad I did. Way, way too much of the crappy type of film they love to give Oscars to, that do not stand the test of time, like Chariots of Fire. Yes, a number of worthy films, but not nearly enough out of 100.

"Breaking Away" making the Top 10 was the high point of the night. "The Miracle Worker" and "The Diary of Anne Frank" making the Top 20 was a close second. These are fantastic films that are almost never talked about anymore so ... thanks AFI!

Another good choice: "Gladiator" : no. "Spartacus" : # 44!

The question is what would be a great idea for next years list, love the guy/Chick idea, but then discussing it i came up with the best idea, the 100 worst films of all time,

Plane 9 from Outer Space
Manos: The Hands of Fate

so many bad films that are loved for whatever reason, and i think we would see movies that are definitely not on any of the other list, time for a shake up, can you see the stars talking about the bad movies they love and having to defend it in public opinion, the sad part is that some of the stars could be talking about some of their own work, ladies and gentelmen oscar winner Halle Berry, will now talk about catwoman, just to funny to think about.

I quote from the AFI criteria for this category:

“CHEERS
“Movies that inspire with characters of vision and conviction who face adversity and often make a personal sacrifice for the greater good. Whether these movies end happily or not, they are ultimately triumphant--both filling audiences with hope and empowering them with the spirit of human potential.

“LEGACY
“Films whose "cheers" continue to echo across a century of American cinema.”

For me at least Hotel Rwanda perfectly meets this criteria.

Count me among those thrilled to see Breaking Away ranked so high!

Here's an interesting stat: 40 of the films were released between 1980 and 2004. My guess is that many of the voters haven't seen the older films on the list of nominated films.

I found it interesting that Jenna Elfman commented on Madame Curie, but I doubt that she's actually seen the film.

I've been watching these AFI specials since 1998 and I've encountered the same problem multiple times. For example, in the opening montage for "100 Years...100 Songs", they showed clips from "Back To The Future", "Wayne's World", "The Little Mermaid" and "South Park: Bigger, Longer And Uncut" and none of them made it onto the list. I felt a little bad that none of them made it it onto the list, but it's okay, though.

Sincerely,

John Kilduff...

Okay, I'm calling it now: I think the 2007 list will be about sci-fi/fantasy movies. Maybe then we'll see "BTTF" and "TLM" on an AFI list.

Since I'm in morning after mode, I'm thinking about movies that didn't make the cut. Surprised no Knute Rockne, All American, VERY surprised Ten Commandments is the ONLY religious movie to make the list.

All in all, I'm thrilled with the list as many of my favorites (Wonderful Life, Mockingbird, Braveheart, Spartacus, Star Wars) made the list, but the placement of a couple of those movies is oddly low.

Just saying.

They could have called the list "AFI's: Tribute to Steven Spielberg" 3 films in the top 10 is a bit much to say the least.

Still, can't complain about slotting one of the best films of all time at #1.

Bridge on the River Kwai is the biggest oddball to me, particularly to be so high on the list. To me it is a film about blindness, ego, and failure and the human costs that occur when such traits are exhibited by someone with power and authority. I've never thought of Kwai as an uplifting film or an example of the "triumph of the human spirit". That the bridge is blown up in the end seems beside the point.

If it was a tribute to anyone, it was Sidney Poitier. He had five or six movies on the list and was heavily featured in the interviews.

How could it not? My 19 and 21 year old watch it all the time and have read up on the actors.

Wow...there was actually a silent film on the list, and I was certain there wouldn't be. Charlie made it. Although, embarrassingly, he was beaten by Stallone. What a joke. And not a funny one.
