There has been much anticipation towards the first four 4K UHD releases from Imprint/Via Vision. We know how their blu-rays are hit and miss, according to the master provided to them, but for these 4K UHD releases, they have commissioned their own scans and collated lavish collector's packages. I ordered my favourite drag queen movie, Priscilla, as this was an Australian production, and has been restored from the 35 mm negative for this release.
It doesn't disappoint. Shipping was fast - two weeks - and I only paid a minimal import duty, as Imprint declared the customs value as "$5 Australian dollars". The video quality on the 4K UHD is excellent projected onto a large screen - there is fine grain visible, fine detail is much better rendered (look at the hair on the bottom screenshot), the video never gets crushed in the interior and night time scenes and the colour balance is superior, compared to the included blu-ray. There is a stack of extras - always Imprint's selling point for me - and the one hour 2015 feature documentary, Between a Frock and a Hard Place, narrated by Terence Stamp, is exceptionally good.
Of course, this is light years better than the old MGM blu-ray, now consigned to land-fill.
Don't order from US Amazon - it's 60% more expensive there!
A couple of comparisons between the restored blu-ray (top) and 4K on my projector screen.
