Believe it or not, I've not purchased any of Image Entertainment's DVDs of The Twilight Zone episodes. Just never got around to it, and the Rod Serling classic has not been a priority for me. Until now.

So I went to my two favorite online retailers to check the prices and to form an action plan.

Much to my surprise, I noticed the series has not been issued in chronological order. I then returned to HTF to run a search on Twilight Zone-related threads, but had forgotten about the function being disabled during peak-traffic hours. And I didn't go online last night because I was busy watching some movies.

So, what's the dealeo? What was Image's rationale for releasing the series the way it did? And, are all seasons and episodes present and accounted for?

    Thanks.

Note that the individual 3-episode or 4-episode discs have been reissued in "Collection" boxes. The boxes should be a LOT cheaper if you are planning to collect more than a few episodes.

There's alot of information in the existing TZ threads including one in the Software Archive.

Oh, one in the archive. I will check it out!

Thanks, Rex, for the reply. And, yes, I'm serious: I want all episodes. To get them, I must purchase the 43 individual volumes as well as the Treasures sets?

The Image box sets that are coming out are identical to the individual discs already issued (except for the cases). Fortunately, I only bought one of the inidividuals, so am buying all the box sets. I understand the 5 boxes contain ALL the episodes.

IMHO, these do not need to be seen in broadcast order. And they are consistently excellent. Surprising how well most of the episodes hold up.....

    Cheers

Unfortunately, I bought about 22 of the individuals... so I got problems!

So I'm lucky, then? Just buy the five boxsets and be done with it? Hell, I could have the entire series within a month or so. (And I understand Image's transfers are gorgeous.)

Here is the dealeo, Jack! You can either get the Gold Collection for $400 from MediaRacer or through their retailer, Another Universe (the mishandlers of MSCL!). Available only online from those dealers.
OR you can get the Collection #1 - 5 sets put out by Image and available cheap at any Costco, or for just a tad more at Best Buy. Or super-cheap through FYE.com using their latest online coupon (do a google search). 1-4 are out now (I own 'em; they're great!) and #5 is due on 2/25. Don't be fooled by AU's claims that the Image sets will be missing anything; they will be COMPLETE!
The Image sets retail around $65-%75 dollars, and can be had for less at FYE.com if you are crafty. Do the math, and you'll see that you are paying through the shnazola for the in-airdate-order sets from MediaRacer.
Don't worry about airdate order for this anthology series, and just get it as cheap as you can. IMHO.

You can get sets 2-5 for about $49 each and first set for $56 not including state sales tax at FYE.com with their 20% off coupon code. Coupon can be used multiple times and they ship either by Priority Mail or Fed Ex.

Note that FYE's info about TZ Collection 5 at the link BrianP provided is wrong on the disc count. It is NOT 6 discs; it is 9 DVDs, like all the others:

    2. Volume #38
    3. Volume #39
    4. Volume #40
    5. Volume #41
    6. Volume #42
    7. Volume #43
    8. Treasures of the Twilight Zone
    9. More Treasures of the Twilight Zone

The few of them I have look fine enough to me, however, various posts in various threads have mentioned quality differences in the video from the earlier, Panasonic-produced discs, as opposed to the later, Image-produced discs. I passed it on only as second-hand information, a possible caveat, which it is.

The early Panasonic volumes were indeed mastered from videotape sources, right down to the superimposed airdates over the opening titles on the "Treasures" discs ("Where Is Everybody?", for example). They don't look horrible by any means, but if you a/b "The Monsters Are Due On Maple Street" from volume 2 and "Four O'Clock" from volume 35, there's a very obvious difference. This is not merely a case of varying source material (as is sometimes the case), but rather what appears to be a combination of latter-generation sources (videotape versus original film negatives), dodgy compression, and the dreaded edge enhancement. Again, they don't look horrible... but these early volumes leave a lot to be desired (and don't even get me started on those slow menus). It's great that the volumes improved over time once Image took over, but the sad fact is that most of the series' greatest episodes are represented on the earlier (and inferior) volumes.

I don't care much for the menu music either, but it's not that bad.

Anyway, after viewing Collection One, I definitely want to get the rest of the series.

Highly recommended for anyone who is interested in TZ.

I assume that they will never retransfer the shows in the earlier volumes, yes? It's a pity because most of the better shows are on these....
    sigh.....

Hence my dismay, Dave. [IMG] With no less than three distinct versions to choose from (individual volumes, Image collections, and the upcoming Gold Collection), I doubt if we'll ever see TZ revisited on DVD.

BrianP, you are a gentleman and a scholar.

Thanks for alerting me to the great price at FYE.com

Can't seem to find Volume 1 around here...just ordered it with the coupon code shipped 2 day air for less than I paid for Volume 2 at Costco!

    Thanks
