:D Great list Brian, Showgirls I understand, it's an all time classic, and I think they were discussing it over in the Sight & Sound thread, but Electric Boogaloo? Cannonball Run, woohoo! Funny thing is don't be surprised if they turn out to be amongst the first releases to be um released.

My 10 (or so) great films who's cinematography would really showcase High Definition DVD:

Days of Heaven
il Conformista
(not on DVD, yet I'm hoping for HD ;) )
8 1/2
The Thin Red Line
City of God
The Man Who Wasn't There
The Red Violin
(showcase for sound as well)
Magnolia
The Sacrifice
Fitzcarraldo

R U kidding? Do you know how long it took to get Electric Boogaloo on DVD? Cannonball run took a while (but not nearly as long as Breakin' 2) as well. And if I recall correctly, Cannonball 2 came before the first movie on DVD (and priced at $9.99)

Everyone picks the same old most requested movies, and there's nothing wrong with that. I picked all the movies everyone wants but is afraid to ask for :D

This may be a fairly obvious observation, but isn't this the same as asking 'What are your favorite movies?' Oh, well, I'll play:

2001: a space odyssey
Lawrence of Arabia
Star Wars
Empire Strikes Back
Citizen Kane
Godfather
Godfather Part II
Schindler's List
The Lord of the Rings
Double Indemnity

Not necessarily Jan, I left off some films from my list which are favorites - either due to age, shape of the elements that exist for the film, or cinematography ( at least in terms of softness, although color performance will be better than DVD ) which may not be that much better on HD;

I also included one title on the basis of being pure eye-candy, namely Microcosmos.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls
Eraserhead
The Thing From Another World
Big Trouble in Little China
Glen or Glenda?
Harold & Maude
Deadful Melody (HK)
7th Voyage of Sinbad
Army of Darkness
Spiderbaby

If these are available, then it means the great stuff you've all listed will probably be out -- and I'll be a happy camper.

No, I chose movies with a strong visual component. As much as I love Breaking the Waves, it isn't at the top of my list of films I most want to see (and own) on a High Def format.

Yeah yeah of course you're right we should be concentrating on films that would benefit the most out of the higher resolution and detail we'd be getting on these discs, Showgirls is first on my list. hmmm I wonder if we'd be able to see the flying saucers that were obviously attempting to abduct John Wayne on the set of Rio Grande with greater clarity on HD-DVD? That's number two on my list...

But wouldn't every film benefit from the higher resolution afforded by HD-DVD? Wouldn't it make these DVDs more film-like? And Steve's point is well-taken. Give me a better looking Red River, for instance, over the jaw-dropping clarity and resolution of Independence Day any day of the week.

Thank God my desert island has electricity. In no particular order:

Lawrence of Arabia (Duh.)
2001: A Space Odyssey (Double duh.)
Jaws (Narrowly beating Schindler's List for this spot.)
Heavenly Creatures (Yes, I love it this much.)
The Lord of the Rings (If I was really limited to one film here, I'd pick Fellowship.)
Blade Runner (Director's cut, definitely.)
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (My favorite from Gilliam.)
Raiders of the Lost Ark (Best adventure film ever.)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind (Best alien encounter film ever)
The Matrix (Best Matrix movie ever)
