Pe Ell was officially incorporated on March 9, 1906. The name is a mispronunciation of the first name of an 1850s French-Canadian settler Pierre Charles by local Native Americans that got attached to the area.

Washington state has some pretty oddball place names, such as Cle Elum. What the heck is that all about?

Maybe named by a settler from the east--a member of the Ellen James Society--who sore admired her hometown of Cleveland and hoped to recreate it in the new frontier.
