since there's no R1 (or a planned release on R1), I'm considering the Janaese R2.

Anyone own or have seen it? Comment on the spec or quality?

And while we're talking about Japanese releases of Polanski films, can anyone comment on Repulsion?

I picked up TESS from CD Japan last year. It's not bad if you're dying to see it in widescreen. Compositionally it looks good with the frame projected towards the "top" of the screen (allowing for the optional Japanese subtitles to go underneath). The 2.35 frame looks OK but the transfer seems to have been derived from a PAL source which would account for it running slightly under the US theatrical cut (in other words, the speed-up/time-compression is the reason for the shorter running time, and not anything that appeared to be cut). Soundtrack is non-5.1 and is OK but nowhere near as detailed as my old LD.

No extras either (unless you read Japanese), so I'd say a tough call considering it's a bit pricey at $40...I'd recommend it if you're a die-hard fan of the movie, but otherwise, I'd still wait for a R1 release, which undoubtedly would be of a higher quality, IMHO.

There was a PAL R2 released in Sweden, but it now seems to be OOP (link to a swedish shop). Considering it cost SEK 99 (approx $9) it was not bad, a decent anamorphic transfer and a subtle 5.1-mix, almost like the roiginal stereo...

I have the Scandinavian DVD, and though anamorphic, I think the transfer leaves something to be desired.

But it was much, much cheaper than the Japanese DVD. Kim's Video may still have it...

Speaking of Nastasia -- is a R1 Paris - Texas going to happen or should we be grabbing the R2?
