Simple question...who likes to hear music over the phone?
    I'm guessing NO ONE.
Last week I called a hospital in Utah to speak to a relative there. Awful tuneless saxophone music, it sound like nothing less than a porno soundtrack.
Last night I was on hold with Home Depot. The sounds they picked to blast into my left ear were, I don't know, maybe hip hop, I know I hated it.
Often in a restaurant I'll look around at the other diners and think, "None of these folks are into whatever crap is playing right now."
Just now I was on hold with my credit union and, once again, it was perfect porno music.
I'm old enough to have grown up hating and laughing at Muzak...now it just seems like a pleasant memory.

Ah, hold on Jim, I'll be right with you please

Talkin' to myself and feelin' old
    Sometimes I'd like to quit
    Nothing ever seems to fit
    Hangin' around
    Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

What I've got they used to call the blues
    Nothin' is really wrong
    Feelin' like I don't belong
    Walkin' around
    Some kind of lonely clown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

Funny but it seems I always wind up here with you
Nice to know somebody loves me
Funny but it seems that it's the only thing to do
Run and find the one who loves me.

What I feel has come and gone before
No need to talk it out
We know what it's all about
    Hangin' around
    Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.

On this side of the Herring Pond, it tends to be The Four Seasons (Vivaldi, not the group, or for that matter, the pizza) or Beethoven's 6th Symphony (the bit used in Fantasia). I didn't particularly mind either piece of music before, but the simple Pavlovian association of hanging on a phone now has me grinding my teeth in annoyance whenever I hear these pieces in any context.

If these guys would just have a bit more imagination, just think what we could have:

    Hangin' on the telephone
    Sittin' and waitin'
Anything from George Michael's new album
And another Floyd track - Is there anybody out there?
We've gotta get out of this place
Nessun dorma [for 24 hour call centres]

And all the great musical jokes individual companies could have: undertakers playing anything on the Stiff record label; a fast food joint playing the theme music from Soylent Green. [IMG]
