Maybe the winner had a heart attack upon finding out they'd won, and died. I can't think of another reason not to collect the prize.

I just ran this story this morning as a lark. My secretary's response... "I wouldn't ever, EVER want to know that I had that ticket."

    Could you imagine...

I dropped a fifty out of my pocket by accident once, and I felt terrible for a MONTH. This would kill me.

Well, yes I'd be upset with myself for losing the ticket or not checking the numbers.

But really, the person didn't actually LOSE anything except $1. They just didn't gain the $50mil. Aside from the guilt of their stupidity, the person isn't any worse off than before the numbers were announced.

true leila, but by not claiming the 50 mil, the person lost the opportunity to have the money. he or she only actually 'lost' the $1 if you think of it this way...the person had the $1, then lost it on a ticket, winning or losing. i guess it is all semantics anyway. sucks to be that person, unless he didnt know about it winning. ignorance is what now?

Yep, $50 million in free money, yours for the taking if you can produce that little slip of paper. It's gotta hurt if you're aware of "what might have been."

I've always wondered how many contest like this go without a winner? For example, what are the odds that someone eats the special m&m in a dark movie theater? Loto is probably and exception because people buy the ticket and intend to check the numbers but what about games such as monopoly at McDonalds that require you to collect multiple pieces. What if you had the rare piece and didn't know it? I wonder if companies that sell these types of promotional games provide statitics as to the probability of not having to pay out?

I thought the person to win the first McDonalds Monopoly game was a trashman that found the winning ticket to the grand prize while doing his route. That could've just been an urban legend though.

The guy was probably a billionaire and decided it was too much work to go in and claim a paltry $50 million.

Or it might have been a crook on the lam. Dumb idea to even purchase a ticket in that case.

Actually, many of the McDonalds winners were cheats, a result of an inside contact at the firm McD hired to handle the games. There was a big story on it a while back.

I would probably be mad for the rest of my life if I did something stupid like that. I hope he/she never finds out they were the winner.

Sometimes people play by the "code" on the ticket. Our instant tickets all have a letter code indicating prize level. Some people just scratch enough of the ticket to find these codes then, if it doesn't match, throw it away.

However, the real kicker is that the big jackpot tickets utilize some of the same letters as losing tickets. So it always pays to look over any ticket carefully.
