    How do I remove the Windows Messennger icon from my system tray? I'm running XP and despite not using messenger I have been unable to remove this icon.

    If you know your way around the registry you can do this:

    You might be able to disable it in System Configuration Utility.

    Is this Windows Messenger or MS Messenger?

    I didn't know Windows Messenger had an icon in the tray.

    Without going into the registry try this.

    Do a all files search(hidden files included) for a file under the name.

    "sysoc.inf"

    You should see a bunch of entries with a HIDE extension. What this does is hide the entry from the add/remove window.

    this is the line you are looking for.

    "msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7

    Delete the word "hide" and one of the "," then save and exit.

    Now goto add/remove programs and msn messenger should be there

    Open Messenger and go into the preferences. Check off the box that allows it to start with windows.

    You caould also go into the control panel, go to add/remove programs in the setup tab and deselect messenger.
