Okay, now just hear me out on this because I know that there are one or two people out there who will agree with me on this. [IMG]

On the open-matte VHS version, in an early scene, Ed Harris wears only a towel. He walks into the living room, plops down in a chair, and the towel lifts up to give viewers a very quick glimpse of...well, you know. However, on the OAR DVD, this bit is matted out.

Now, as much as I respect a director's vision and believe that a film must be presented as intended by the director, I have to admit that in this particular case, a(n) MAR might be preferable (or at least provided as an option on a double-sided disc).

The above is submitted respectfully and with tongue planted firmly in cheek. [IMG]

Yes, just like how it's better to take the frame off of a painting so you can see the splotches on the edge of the canvas.

You really think you're going to get a lot of people in favor of Ed Harris nudity?

On the open matte side of The Return Of The Living Dead there is a scene in the convertible outside the graveyard where the top splits and water falls on the topless Linnea Quigley, in OAR you can not see much of her but on the open matte side you get a rather nice eye full and realise that the water was apparently pretty cold. [IMG]

I'm not saying that I prefer open matte to OAR but...well...sometimes it ain't so bad. [IMG]

So we're settled. When more female nudity is exposed, we love open matte.

Nope. In Mischief, you get a little more of Kelly Preston if it's open matte, but I would have been pretty unhappy if Anchor Bay had made the entire movie open matte for that one second of footage.

In the wide screen For Pete's Sake, there is a scene with Michael Sarrazin taking a bath while Barbra Streisand talks to him. In the unmatted trailer of that scene, Mr. Sarrazin's bathing trunks can clearly be seen.

Perhaps Ed Harris should have worn underwear under that towel.

actually comparing my old MSICHIEF LD. not not are missing out on some of Kelly's you knows, but also some of her breasts when she is lying down, with Doug McKeon on top.

Yes, I know it is meant for us NOT to see her privates and breasts, BUT SOME of us enjoyed this scene the open matte way when we were young in the eighties!

So I think had Anchor Bay let FOX release it instead of taking it away, we would have been happy, as Fox always include both versions, but in this case, as much as I advocate OAR, sometimes nudity is good, so if Ed Harris shows more, then thats good for the die hard fans, maybe not for hardcore OAR advocates, but as much as I want OAR (I was complaining about titles not coming out in it's OAR, like THE MOUNTAIN MAN, BANK SHOT, BILLIE, GIDGET, SWORD OF VALIANT, TOM SAWYER)sometimes it's nice to have a choice.

I am sure there is a list of titles that the OAR matted out infamous nude scenes somewhere on this board....

From the rumors I heard Anchor Bay did throw fans a (ahem) bone with the Mischief DVD in that whoever did the WS transfer manipulated the framing so that you could see more of Preston's goods downstiars in that scene. I think what would be cool in these situations would be to put open matte nudity shots in as easter eggs, but I guess that might be considered crude, huh?

Of course, seeing more nudity in the full screen versions open matte films is not uncommon, although it does surprise me that it happens as much as it does. I would have thought that those instances when the nudity was never meant to be seen would be filmed more carefully, filmed hard matted or pan and scanned around in the full screen transfer.

There is a older thread that chronicles open matte nudity films somewere, I tried to search for it but was unable to locate it.

Generally nudity in modern films is contractual and specific.

Many actors, in order to make a scene more natural or realistic will shoot a scene totally or partially nude, with the full knowledge that the frame will be cropped appropriately, or that lighting will be their cover. This makes many things easier, inclusive of the makeup or costuming necessitated by mole skins, which will also creep into the frame destroying a mood.

Placing a video transfer into the hands of someone innocent to those agreements is not only improper, but in many cases in derogation of specific contractual terms.

As beautiful or interesting as certain anatomical parts of some thespians may be, and many thespians are prime human specimans, consider for a moment that this is all done professionally and in the spirit of getting something looking correct on film, and that the individual in the shot is someone's sister or mother, who has to show up a week after as video's release at their kid's school.

But I guess that takes all the fun out of it.

The real question is: why would I want to see Ed Harris' splotch?

A more convincing case (for male viewers, at least) for the benefits of open matte could be made by citing as an example Jackie Brown, or should I say Bridget Fonda. [IMG]

Not all male viewers want to see Bridget Fonda nude [IMG]

Plus, Ed Harris looked pretty good back then to me.

    Must...resist...obvious...thespian joke...

Seriously, though, isn't "Remo Williams" one of the very few movies where the version that's been opened up is slightly superior? And of course, there's the eternal debate between Joss Whedon's OAR and the R2 widescreen seasons of "Buffy".

also early on in the movie there is a shower scene and a flesh colored slip was clearly seen being worn by the lady in question

Same thing happens in Fatal Attraction. In the open matte version, Michael Douglas accidentally shows off his package while putting on pants....not visible in the OAR.
