Hey gang,

Fortune favoured the foolish today as I received a call from a pal who often frequents yard sales. This chap has little knowledge or interest in LDs, but he's surely aware of my own enthusiasm. Would I be interested in something called the Star Wars Definitive Collection box-set, he asks? All nine discs there? Hard-cover book? Booklet? Yes, yes, and yes. Good shape? Yep. How much, sez I. $40CDN ($26USD roughly). Mmm, talk him down, I say, flirting with disaster (my noggin was fuzzy with sleep at the time, and I already own the Faces editions). In the end, my good pal showed up at my door with the big box demanding a trifle of $30CDN (about $20 in real money) from me. How do you suppose a guy could sell an item such as this for so little? I sure as heck don't know, and at this point, I care less.
Question for all you LD gurus: the box consists of all 9 discs, a booklet, and the hardcover (and other than some minor shelf-wear on the lower corner and less-than-pristine slip-covers, the set is looking good). Am I missing anything in the box? My research on the 'Bay and elsewhere tells me I'm not, but I turn to you for the final word. Verdict? Thanks, guys. And hey, get out to those weekly yard sales! Cheers!

DS.

Don't worry that the George Lucas book does not have a slip cover. That's the way it came.

Enjoy!

Nice pick up.

Just make sure you have the corrected version of The Empire Strikes Back with the missing scene intact. I believe the initial printings omitted the scene on disc two with Han and the Princess conversing inside the Falcon but maybe someone who knows about the scene could give it's location and what's missing.

Check out 'Empire' for the corrected disc - original pressings had the scene between Leia and Han repairing the Milennium Falcon slightly abbreviated, and after being so advised by laserphiles, TCF corrected and re-pressed the appropriate single disc and sent it to those who made their presence known...

"Good score. Throw in that trailer for "Revenge of the Jedi" for kicks."

Is there a difference between this trailer and the one on the ROTJ disc in the Special Edition LD's? I seem to remember a different trailer that came out with the re-release of SW in 82 that had a Revenge trailer.

The disc to check is Empire Strikes Back, disc 2, side A, right at the beginning. If you see Leia welding, you've got the corrected version. Not any real big deal if you don't, especially at $20 and no shipping.

As another poster said...just be content to spend the money even if the discs are rotted. This CAV pressing in this box set was *very* prone to rot.

GRRRRR.

I echo the rot sentiments. I bought a set for 100 off of ebay a year ago, and disc 1 of Empire is now showing signs of rot.

I wouldn't sweat it. It's only about 10 seconds of Leia welding.

This book is very cheap on Ebay. I scored a copy for $1 (plus shipping).

I was able to purchase the Def. Collection for $3. How, you ask? Back in early '99 my dad started working at the corporate headquarters of a certain video rental chain. When laser started dying and they cleared their stock out, they sold them for $1 each at the company store. Between '99 and '02 I must have bought 300-400 discs (I'm too lazy to count). They were ex-rentals, but still, I can't believe my good fortune. :)
