Question
Which one will give me the biggest bang for the buck??

I have sent-mails to both company reps, and the rep from onix replied faster and well the salesmanship was definately there. The Ascend rep seemed kinda dry.

I am in the military currently stationed in europe. My living room is probably 3m x 5-6m x 2.5m, (I posted the size in an earlier post but can't remember right now and it was in feet). I will be moving at least twice more and have no idea what size the living rooms will be (the joy of government quarters).

I mainly listen to music, ranging from AC/DC to Zappa with the Grateful Dead and Tangerine Dream in the middle. Add to that blues, jazz fusion, classical (Mozart primarily), and what is known as New Age (Kitaro, Mannheim Steamroller, Carlos Nakai etc).

I have a Pioneer VSX-D912 AV Receiver, and the Pioneer DV-667 DVD Player (yes I am on a low budget), and am curretly using JBL Control LA speaker, and the JBL Control SB5 passive Sub.

The move up to 5.1 or 7.1 (probably 5.1 as that is what the DVD player has) will be a first for me.

I am looking for something that will provide a quality sound, within a reasonable budget, and yet is versatile enough to manage differing room configurations.

I like what I have read about both the Onix and Ascend speakers, Listening to them first would be nice yet the shipping is almost prohibitive

On the other hand If you can recommend some good european speaker manufacturers that would fall into the same budget arena as the Onix/Ascend combo, I would locate a listening room and check them out (although the powered sub would not be good as odds would be that it would be 220v only and that doesn't work well in the states. Oh yeah I have both 110v and 220v in my current living quarters)

Also could you tell me if the SVS comes in 110-240v options or is it only 110v OR 220v.

thanks

David,

Some European speakers I've had good experiences with: Mordaunt Short and Monitor Audio (both U.K.), Triangle (French) and have heard both good and bad about Wharfedale Diamonds (U.K.).

I'm in the same boat as DavidWReece. I also am staioned in Europe and I am looking for a 7.1 HT speaker setup. I currently have a Yamaha RX-V2400 AV receiver with old ADS L880 speakers (NICE). If you could provide me the same info that DavidWReece is asking for that would be awsome. Thank you.

Anthony,

Can you offer a single pair of the Ascend CMB-170s at a better price than the Ascend direct website? They have them for $340 shipped.

Or any 3.1 set up (L/C/R) of Ascend speakers?

Due to our contractual agreements I can only offer what Ascend does on their speakers but no less unless I bundle the items for value. I am not allowed to discount pairs. A 3.1 system will be as they have listed it on their site. I am thinking of putting up a multiple Ascend only setup much they have without the subwoofer. If you would like to buy anything else...wires, DVD player, remote control, antenna, MP3 player, camera, portable DVD player, etc I would be able to make perhaps a better combo for you. There is much we have not listed with over 11,000 products at our disposal.

Are you upgrading your system? I can offer you this...If you are just buying the system to test out the speakers, buy the front two or three and if you like them, I will upgrade your system to a 5.0 or 5.1 combo and the only amount that you pay extra will be for the combo price. You upgrade again from say a 5.1 to a 7.1 It will only cost you the difference in price of the combo units. I think that is fair? :D That way you can test them and if you like them you will only pay what you would have if you bought the system outright.

Doesn't Ascend offer the same exact deal, under the "System Extender" link on their website?

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is what, if any, advantage there is in going with you instead of goind directly through Ascend.

The benefit is we sell Ascends with SVS and Ascend sells their speakers with Hsu subs. We have a tremendous resource of other products to bundle their products with for more savings in a package where they do not. Our mantra is "packaged value." What we may not be able to offer directly on the sale of the speakers, we can offset with the purchase of other items which ultimately will all cost you less in combination. Where we shine is if you want to buy an entire home theater setup where you can buy TV, stand, receiver, speakers, wire, DVD player, remote, furniture, and power-strip in one place for convenience and great savings. We also offer the ability to exchange products for others, as we have more of a selection should you not like your purchase, have excellent customer service and a very educated staff to design systems custom tailored for you and your specific system needs. To some this is an advantage and to others it is not.

I hope that answers your question. :)

Hmmm, I only wish I had that kind of moolah to play with! But I understand what you're saying, thanks for taking the time to explain it all.

I understand exactly what you are saying. . . I have said for years when many started fair trading their products (Paradigm) that the best deal was to pay full pop for the speakers then get your discounts on accessorie items like wires, DVD, CD players etc.

BTW I am in the process of upgrading my HT system and I have noticed both the 370 that I am considering buying 5 and then 2 more of the smaller 170s. The subwoofer will be the PB12-Plus/2. . .

I have wire etc. but I will be moving from my 4800 Toshiba DVD player and I am considering Pioneer ELITE VSX-56TXi receiver, I just sold my 45TX and I bought the 1014 for temp use (might stay) My plan is to have this completed by the 20th of this month.

Please PM me details or post them here. I will continue to study on that speaker for now.
