First, thanks for the compliment.

To answer your question, I quit when the new rules went into effect, because:

1. You don't change the rules of a game midway. That takes whatever integrity the game has and flushes it down the toilet. I mean, sorry, if I'm playing chess with my buddy and we both agree that the game is going slowly, we're not going to change the rules of the game to expedite matters. How can you take the subsequent turn of events seriously, then? Plus I don't think things were progressing slowly. So, in theory, what has taken place here is wrong and in bad taste.

2. Apart from theory, in actuality, the rules change ruined things as well. If you go back to the first page of the game, you'll remember that I voiced my displeasure with the rules as they were constituted at that time. The game is all defense with no offense. One is merely attempting to prevent his/her 20 films from being eliminated, rather than proactively achieving/compiling a list of 20 films (such as the first 20 films to reach 6 points are the winners, while if a film reaches 0 points, then it's eliminated and no longer has the opportunity to reach 6 points and become a winner. In this iteration of the game, one is playing both offense and defense).

Now with the rules changes, not only can one not play offense, but one effectively cannot play defense either.

If films A and B are in my top 20 and both are being threatened due to other participants knocking off a point from both A and B with each turn, the only recourse I have to is to attempt to defend one of the two films. Yet, if I defend film A, then film B is still vulnerable, and there's nothing I can do about it.

As a result, this game has devolved into a shooting gallery, where the individual who has the most bullets and shoots the most shots will win the game. To use another metaphore (hockey), everyone now has two shots on goal, and the goaltender can only block one of the two shots, while at the same time not being able to take a shot on goal himself.

This configuration is boring and nonsensical to me, and it doesn't uphold the original design of the game, which is to compile a consensus list for the top 20 films as determined by the game's participants. As we've seen, people with agendas easily can sabatoge films now, and nothing can be done about it on defense by the film's fans (let alone offense, which hasn't been in this game to begin with, as I have explained).

Since the game's integrity has been irrevocably damaged in both theory and practice, and since there now is no way to play offense or sufficient defense, there's really no reason for me to keep participating.

For these reasons, I anticipate this to be my last post in this thread.

Have fun (all five of you, smh), and I'll see you elsewhere on HTF.

Thomas, I've felt pretty much the same way, and you've articulated it very well. At first I was happy about the idea of "speeding up" the game, but in practice it has turned into kind of a mess. And not a particularly enjoyable or enlightening one. I think it would have worked out better from the start if more people had participated (Polls used to be such an active subforum, but I guess most folks got bored with it). Right now it's just "see what these five people do and don't like!"... and I think we all know that already.

And so, I think I'll join you and bow out myself.

Lookie there, george, you're not "outnumbered" anymore! I look forward to a final list of absolutely nothing but "classic Hollywood" movies.

Adam,

For the record, I thought this was a great idea for a game, that ideally should have been a lot of fun for all involved. In retrospect, it's kind of easy to see that a very small number of passionate movie lovers, all with disparate tastes, in a game that went on quite a while, and required near constant logging in to play well, would lead to frayed nerves and degeneration. In retrospect, it's easy to see ways it could have been set up differently, but I'm not going to second guess you. You had a great idea, and you did your best to liven things up, and I applaud you for it. I for one, had fun.

And now, I'm going to go watch the Apartment on some updated theater equipment I got early for Xmas. :)

Ooh, what'd ya get? I still can't get over The Searchers in HD, but I still need to configure my speakers, etc for my new Onkyo 605 receiver. If I'd known I was getting a Christmas bonus, I might have gone for a Pioneer Elite though.

Thanks Adam, sorry it kind of all fell apart. And yes, I still know I owe you some goods. I've had 2 of 'em done forever, but haven't ever gotten around to the other one. I'll try to get it done over the weekend. A million apologies.

hah, I'd forgotten all about that, Brook.

yeah, we shouldn't have changed the rules, but that exact same rule change went over without a hitch in the other two forums I've seen the game played in. Yeah it is a shooting gallery, and it does work better with more people because then you don't have such an unfortunate choice between do or die. Thanks for playing. y'll knocked 100 films off in just a few weeks.
