Oh. And I guess it really DID pay off for Yul to go along with Adam & Pavarti and vote off Jonathan. Adam says he kept his word and voted to give Yul the $1-million because of that move!
I see Ozzie as a very one-dimensional Survivor player -- he won the physical side of the game. There's enough sports on television -- Survivor doesn't need to become a sports program.
I was very glad Yul won, though I would have been fine with Ozzie winning it as well. And while the idea of having 3 finalists probably looked good on paper, it ended up not adding any real tension; Becky, while being consistently strong and having real impact, was never perceived by the other players as being a threat or contender. Yul and Ozzie were so strong and obvious, Becky was pretty much eclipsed.
I also think it was a pretty bloodless final TC. The Raros came across as bored and snotty more than anything else, but no drama or jabs that landed heavily.
Candace admitting that her lovey-dovey stuff with Adam being almost pure strategy was a bit surprising, but the way they acted at the reunion confirmed that there was very little genuine romantic action going on.
And I have to reiterate that was, IMNSHO, the "prettiest" Survivor cast yet. I'm not a great judge of male attractiveness, but Yul, JP and Adam seem like they would be considered attractive, and Jonathan cleaned up OK. But it was the women - whoo! Becky, Parvati, Sundra, Christina, Cecilia...all beauties. And while I didn't think Jenny was attractive while on the island, she cleaned up very well.
And that is the very issue that helps keeps Survivor fresh every season.
Patrick: I was wondering that same thing. I would guess you are correct with that list.
They really should have shown the voting over the closing credits...or, maybe over a throw-to-commercial...like while Seiku was singing his "lovely" song!
I was thinking about that final 3 thing, and I think that it was a good thing because in the end it forced the two best players to go up against each other. I mean think about it, under the old rules can you think of any scenario where we'd see Yul and Ozzy against each other? Once Becky made final 3, she was destined to face the jury just because of her whole coattails strategy. Too many times over the years have the best competitors been prevented from being able to face the jury because of a single vote leaving a one dud up there in the final two. Becky was a non factor, but it at least allowed the two clearly dominant players Yul and Ozzy there to duke it out.
I thought Becky should have at least made an argument that she didn't have Ozzy or Yul's physical strength and so the only way she could have made it to the final was the way she did. She shouldn't be penalized for being smaller or less physical than the two men. In fact, she should be given extra credit for managing to succeed despite her physical weakness. At least I think that's how she should have made her case. Wouldn't get her the win, but she had to make a better case for herself than she did.
The best thing for Yul would have been if Becky was on the jury. Not sure if he got Sundra's vote, but Becky's would have been a lock. That was the best reason to not give her the HII.
I'm glad for the final three, because the final vote is either a cakewalk or due to grudges and personal differences, the least deserving contestant wins, and that rankles me. This was the closest vote ever based on merit and accomplishment -- when was the last Survivor where you actually felt either finalist deserved to win?
It will be interesting to see how having a final three affects the way they play the game in the future. I think that they should have told the players that there would be a final three instead of springing it on them -- it would have made the strategy completely different. Now you have to strategize to being two goats to the finals!
According to Wiki, Sundra, Jenny, Parvati, and Nate voted for Ozzy, the rest for Yul.
EDIT: Wiki has revised to Jenny, Parvati, Nate and Rebecca vote for Ozzy.
Jeff Probst was trying to say that Adam was the deciding vote because of his previous agreement with Yul. I think Jonathan was the decider because he really could have gone either way.
I thought be would have a problem with Yul because of the way he was voted off - but I think he gave kudos to the fact that Yul was the better manipulator.
Seems that guys might have more of a problem with a guy who is a better physical competitor than them, but can accept it if he is a better manipulator! Maybe because they're so used to being manipulated by women?
Of course, Yul got to that final position because he found the idol and played it better than anyone else ever has.
I think it was obvious Jonathan was voting for Yul. The real swing vote was Rebecca considering she spent zero time with either Yul nor Ozzy other than at challenges. Interestingly, she went with Yul presumably based on his answer at Tribal, but in a way, it's because he was asked first that Ozzy could only say, "What he said". I really liked Yul's response to Jonathan about how he wouldn't deceive and blindside unsuspecting people outside the game and that the contestants in Survivior are fair game because you know what you're getting into. I find to many jury members in the past would blast the finalists for ethical issues when the real problem is that they were outsmarted.
I wonder how the vote would have gone down if Becky had lost the fire making challenge -- assuming Becky votes for Yul, could Rebecca, having only known Sundra, created a 4-4 tie between Yul & Ozzy? Would the car vote been the deciding factor? I also wonder if editing made it look like most of the jury ignored Becky or if they really didn't bother asking her any questions. She really did herself no favors by answering so poorly with that neck scratching nervous tick that made it look like she was lying.
I'm glad Yul won, even though a very big factor in making it this far was that he had the immunity idol - something I was shocked was not brought up (maybe a good strategy for next season: Be a d*** and get sent to Exile Island so you can find the hidden immunity idol). I thought most of Ozzy's answers weren't very good... The 'dad' story seemed really out of place and desperate. I'm sure he'll do fine if he got back into porn acting - my guess is that Yul will use the money more constructively.
Do they still give out $100K to the runner-up? I remember this being mentioned in the first season, but it hasn't been brought up in the last few years, as far as I can remember. Does anyone know how much #s 3, 4, 5, 6, etc. get?
Wow. This has been my favorite season of Survivor thus far. I really enjoyed it.
My first thought when they were at the final tribal council (studio city) was, " I don't remember Joey Lawrence being on Survivor". Ozzie didn't look at all like he did on the island, not even a little. I never would have recognized him.
I'm glad Yule won as well. He played a great game. Ozzie played a good strong game, but Yule definitely was the mastermind behind it all. Poor Becky just sitting there, knowing no one was going to vote for her. That had to be hard.
I still wonder why it is that no one bothered to bring up how Candace was the first to mutiny/betray her tribe, while all during the show she continued to call out Jonathan for being a rat adn disloyal. She did the exact same thing, but no one called her on it.
> It will be interesting to see how having a final three affects the way they play the game in the future.
Assuming they have a final 3 in the future.
> I see Ozzie as a very one-dimensional Survivor player -- he won the physical side of the game.
One dimensional as in winning a lot of challenges, catching fish, climbing trees to get coconuts to feed everyone? He did more than just about all the others in the game.
> Sometimes personal integrity is worth $900K.
Easy to say when you aren't on the show... it's a GAME, people!
Wow, I cannot believe Ozzy lost. I really thought he had it in the bag, not only because he was so dominant but because he seemed to be the one with the least number of enemies in the jury.
Yul had pissed a lot of people off and Becky wasn't getting any votes from anyone for coattail-riding. But I guess the jury recognized Yul's ability to strategize like the best.
Really sad for Ozzy but good for Yul. Thinking about it with a cool head, he's as deserving as well.
If they ever do another Survivor All-star, those 2 have to be part of it. Heck, throw Jonathan as well for the entertainment factor.
Ozzy got a little cocky during the judging and revealed some things I think several in the jury didn't like. Jonathan called him on that. He seemed a little less genuine. When asked why he deserved the money: "Make the world a better place"? Heh! That's a line out of Jonathan's movie The Last Supper!! :p Hey, I liked Ozzy and probably would've voted for him given the chance because I relate to his style better. But I think his slightly cocky approach to the final questioning gave some on the jury a reason to rethink Yul's smarter gameplay approach and attitude during the judging. Yul said "yes" to that one question. He was honest at the end. It really is a tough choice because both excelled in the chosen approach to the game.
I agree, Ozzy and Yul in an All Star might make it worth watching. It would have to be better than the other All Star. That one sucked. This was a great season of the show. Very much enjoyed.
The reason I had Sundra voting for Ozzy was because they kept showing her winking at Ozzy in the Q&A at final TC. With the exception of Parvati (her vote was shown), I kinda figured that the rest of the vote went down ethnic lines, Yul picked up the Asian and Caucasian vote, while Ozzy picked up the Latino and African-American vote.
