I recently purchased a new Blu Ray player. My home theater has already been set up, I just swapped out my old DVD player for the new Blu Ray. Unfortunately, my audio receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs, but, I've used optical for years and have never had any complaints. I have HDMI running from the player directly to the TV, and have the optical cable running from the Blu Ray player to my receiver. My speakers worked just fine with the old DVD player, and literally the only audio thing I changed was unplugging the optical cable from the old player and plugged it into the new one. But now my surround sound doesn't work. I've tried to go through all the audio set ups within the player's menu but nothing seems to change it. The player just won't detect the 5.1 speakers. Sound comes out, but only in stereo on the front side speakers. Why is this happening and what can I do to fix it?

I think you have to let the player know you want the audio to output over optical, instead of HDMI. Then you have to make sure the player is sending audio out as "Dolby Digital", or "Bitstream", whatever it's wording is, instead of PCM. Since all you did was change players, it has to be a setting in the player.

Since you didn't mention model numbers of anything, I'll remind you that if your receiver has 5.1/7.1 multi-channel inputs, and your player decodes the HD audio internally, and has 5.1/7.1 multi-channel outputs, you can get the HD audio from blu ray movies that way.
