Could anyone explain to me the difference between Kenwood's Circle Surround and Yamaha's 5 (or 6) channel stereo? Are they completely different or do they sort of do the same thing?

    hi scott,

all those surround modes like circle surround, pro logic2, dts neo6, six axis and logi7 are so called matrix decoding schematics. they all *steer* some information to the three front channels and some information to the surround channels. this can be done with encoded or non encoded material.

however, they all got absolutely nothing to do with 5 or 6 channel stereo. in that mode you will get exactly the same signal in the two front speakers as you get in the two surround speakers. (just imagine a car stereo system with four speakers, two in front and two in rear).
the front center and the back center will playback all signals which are 100% the same in phase, almost always voices for example.

    regards, holger
